Can not login from ctrl + alt + f2 screen

Hi,

With my first kernel, that comes with Fedora 10 x86_64 installation DVD, I can use ctrl + alt + f2 from desktop, switch to terminal, and log in to any user.

The problem is:
Eventhough the login screen appears as usual with kernels 2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.x86_64 and 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.x86_64, I can not login. When I enter username and password, the screen refreshes itself to its initial state, i.e., like when i hit ctrl + alt + f2 from desktop. I also tried ctrl + alt + f3, f4, f5 etc nothing changes. Also, I want to remind you that I can login from desktop terminal successfully.

Is there someone having trouble with the same issue. Thanks for replies.

Hrrm, can't duplicate it. I assume you're not trying to log in as root from the GUI login.

You might try booting with the rescue option and changing /etc/inittab to default to level 3 (text mode.) Then, you'll be able to log in, hopefully, and perhaps the next update after that will fix it.

I'm sorry to be of such little help, but I haven't experienced that issue.

Quick PS, if you're not sure how to do any part of what I suggested, just post again and I'll give further explanation.

Hi Scottro, you are right about init level login (I tried that one before). If I start my computer from any init level by entering option in the boot menu I can log in. Also, I believe that only I coincide with such a problem, because I have been looking for a solution of this problem over a month and have not been able to find anything on the internet. Thanks for your reply

Don't you hate those "Just Me(TM)" problems? With some of the lowend hardware I have, I get them frequently.

Ok, next question, I guess is, you are definitely not trying to login (in the GUI) as root, right?

Lastly, have you tried, now that you can log in at console, running yum update and seeing if it fixes the problem?

Yes, I hate those problems too. I have an outdated ASUS mainboard P5N-MX with intel Q6600 Quad Core processor and 4 GB RAM on it. The main reason why I chose Fedora 10 x86_64 linux distro is I tried it and it recognized my nVidia network adapter on the mainboard. Before Fedora, I was using Suse (32-bit) and it was doing pretty well with my previous hw configuration.

To reply your next question, yes, I have tried logging in from gui as root but it fails. As far as I see, there are some explanations on the internet to fix that problem, but I am so lazy that I did not try them.

Lastly, running yum from console works perfectly normal, I can update my system using yum but that does not fix my problem. I guess the problem originates from later kernel versions that may introduce some hw or sw incompatibility on my system, since, as I stated, I did not see any problem with the kernel on DVD. I am not a linux expert and this is just a guess .
