yum install dependencies

Please someone help.
the problem is: when I tried "yum install firefox", yum would pull in both gnome and kde as dependencies. (I did a groupremove gnome desktop environment, so firefox was removed as well.)

I think firefox would need some of the gtk stuff, but i saw kde and qt apps were shown as installation dependencies. If I redo groupinstall gnome desktop environment, no kde stuff would shown though. not just that, if I did yum install gnome-session, I saw qt apps shown as dependencies, too.

So, how could I just install firefox or any app without pulling in the dependencies even if they were needed?

thanks

You can always force an install ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK with (as root user):
rpm -ivh --nodeps <insert-PATH-to-RPM-package>

However, as you should expect, with something like firefox that has many dependencies, the application may not function, may not function correctly, or worse.

better off to install Opera if you use KDE only.. firefox relies on Gnome being installed

thanks for all the suggestions. I am still wondering why gnome-session will require kde/qt stuff.

I don't see that it does - directly/immediately. But there must be some in the dependency chain, which is determined ultimately by the (human) individual package maintainer for each of the various packages. Sometimes these dependencies may not appear obvious or truly "necessary", and sometimes they may in fact not be - but as far as YUM is concerned, they are "required".

It's really hard to figure this sort of thing out without seeing the full transaction.
Can you post the full command and output?

Alternately, you might try looking at midori or arora for a lighter weight browser.
