sound volume not consistent

HI there ,

I have a realtek ac97 audio ship on nvidia mobo which works fine in windows < sorry but true and just for referrence>, yet here in fedora 11, while it does work its behaving very oddly..4.0 surround sound setup ( 4 speakers & one base reflex ), and when I move applet volumne control on gnome panel lower..it lowers alsamixer -c 0 vol so low it goes to zero..NO WONDER im having to raise vol really high to get 'decent' volumne levels..is this a known issue with this chip or if not what is the best fix ?

thank you anyone
cheers
nl
