help with multiple networks

I am a relative Linux noob, so please pardon my ignorance.

I have FC2 running on a DELL 8500 laptop. I have the wireless working through ndiswrapper, and the provided broadocm drivers enable the 10/100. I am constantly on different networks, sometimes wired, sometimes wireless. The issue I am having is that boot times are very long if the 10/100 is not connected, and I have to manually configure wireless after boot time because sometimes I do not want wireless enabled. Worse yet is if I boot the machine on the wired network, disconnect the wire, and try to log in, the GNOME window manager takes up to 20 min to give me a useful desktop. How do I speed things up, with the wired network, and how can I set up multiple wireless connections so the machine just scans and picks the proper one?

Thanks,
J
