3D Support Using Generic ATI v.Fedora 11

i've heard back and forth about whether the generic ATI drivers in Fedora 11 provides functional 3d support...

...as of installing F11 (64) i was impressed by the initial capability of the generic drivers but no 3d support as Desktop Effects could not be enabled.

( using ATI Radeon HD 2400 )

what are the usual tips and tricks to get 3d functionality in this environment?!

Bad choice of commands on my part: we only really needed the "VGA" section of lspci....

OK, first: it appears that you installed Fedora on some flavor of an Apple, correct? If so: what flavor (architecture) of Fedora - i.e.: x86, x86_64, PPC, or PPC64 ?? I'm thinking that you may have selected the wrong flavor (architecture) of Fedora.

Right now, you do NOT have real 3D video driver support, so no eye-candy:
Code:
glxinfo|grep render

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
That thing is not the same as the RADEON 3D driver, which should work with your chipset, as I read it: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon

Furthermore:

2D and 3D support available:
[...]
HD2400 denotes a RV610 based card.
[...]
So, as far as I can see, something is wrong, which should be correctable. But I'm not exactly sure what at the moment.

In addition to posting your architecture, please upload your entire log file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log to pastebin.com, and post a link to it here, and we'll review it to see if it provides any clues.

yes... it's a iMac... although i must note that until the major revisions that broke the fglrx... things worked seamlessly.

the Intel Core 2 Duo supports x86_64 architecture... so i use the 64...
(...packages, namely kernel modules work properly, as opposed to the typical yum 386 586 686 mismatching package complications)

it's really a shame that true ATI support has been lost it ...functioned so well...without any 'special needs' tweaking.

Well, here's part of the answer:
Code:
390. (WW) RADEON(0): R600 support is mostly incomplete and very experimental
Here's a suggestion:
Code:
440. (II) RADEON(0): If you are having trouble with 3D, reduce the desktop size by adjusting the Virtual line to your xorg.conf
And here's the fatal error(s), although I'm not sure why:
Code:
766. (EE) AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
I have never seen this exact error(s) before, and do not fully understand it - it is not clear what went wrong.

You can generate a hard copy of xorg.conf (if one does not already exist), and play with it: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...06&postcount=2

In particular: I suggest that you add a section like so:
Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "on"
EndSection
Re-start of X required.

There are many other things that can be tried, but none (that I know of) that will ensure success. See what happens....

V

P.S. Is your system software fully up-to-date ?

adjusting desktop size yields no results...i also created an xorg.conf but with the AIGLX manually specified ... no results either...

all software is completely up to date...

Since you have plenty (128 MB) of VRAM, I would expect no problems due to screen size, and no results from adjusting it.

You did re-start X after the changes, right?

OK, try adding to xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
[...]
        Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
[...]
EndSection
Re-start X, see what happens....

oh yes... i made sure to restart X... (and i must add... that it's quite peculiar that Ctl+Atl+Backspace no longer restarts X)

after adding the above string... X failed to load and shorted out... i then used a Live CD to remove the defunct xorg.conf and restarted...

Well, poo. I guess that was a Bad Idea. Remove the last edit, and try instead:
Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
Re-start X.

I'm shooting somewhat blindly here, so I can't guarantee that things won't fizzle again, so be prepared for more X crashes if this doesn't work. But the suggestions I'm giving are not completely wild guesses either - there is some method to the madness, so... bear with me for now, I won't burden the discussion with long explanations of rhyme and reason, see what happens.

neither of the 'Server Flags' had any effect... things started as usual.

"neither of the 'Server Flags' had any effect" - what do you mean: "neither", there's supposed to be only one:
Code:
Option "AIGLX" "off"
A quick Google search for the stated error message(s) shows that this has been around for a while, yet I found no clear fix(es).

If that did/does not work: try switching to the newer RADEONHD driver, although I suspect it may not (yet) have any 3D support - who knows:
Code:
Section "Device"
        [...]
        Driver "radeonhd"
        [...]
EndSection
Re-start of X required. Be prepared for anything....

OK, I see it now: no 3D support for R600-based chipsets (like HD 2400) with RADEON driver until xorg-x11-drv-ati REV. 6.11.0-1 (http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/b...ildID=112046):
Quote:
* Fri Feb 27 2009 Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com> 6.11.0-1
- rebase to latest upstream
- enable R600 acceleration for EXA and Xv.
But "stock" stable is xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.10.0-3. So: you would have to enable updates-testing repo*, and update xorg-x11-drv-ati, clean xorg.conf of all above edits, then re-start X, see what happens....

V

*EDIT: or fetch it manually from Koji builder, link above.
