How to prevent people from changing their wallpapers
Hello All,
I am facing a really weird kind of issues where my boss has asked me block everybody from changing their wallpapers and put a default one there. I don't have a clue
Can anybody tell me how to do that.

Yeah and also I want to fix a particular wallpaper so that no body should be able to change to a pic of their choice.

There is one way that i know, probably not the best but it works
Quote:
su
chmod 744 /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties
|
and to change it back
Quote:
su
chmod 755 /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties
|
so only someone who knows your root password can change the background etc..

Don't know about gnome, but in KDE all the configuration ends up in a text file. If they have access to a text editor, they can change the configuration file manually.

Which file would that be? Could it be symlinked to somewhere where they don't have write acces for example?

In kde, ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktopwallpapersrc
In gnome, ~/.gnome2/backgrounds.xml might be the ticket, but I don't use gnome.
You might want to look at kiosk type managers depending on your user base. These let you fine tune what users are allowed to do.

Thank you for that, and kiosk type tools are probably well worth looking into.
Now, if someone has a great idea on how to achieve this on *couch*vista*couch*.. But that might be a new thread instead of me hijacking this one I think.

Sweet, that will come in handy in the fall when work begins! Believe me when I say that I have googled, but didn't find anything like this, and it's doable by group policies! woot!
/me fires up a virtual vista to test things out. Thanks Ilja!
