Which book is better of these two?

I'm new to Linux, have been fiddling around with ubuntu and fedora for about a month now. I've decided to go with Fedora since it's more industry oriented and since I love Linux . Just like to ask which book is better that will be good for beginner and have fair amount of details. (Because I like to know "how it's done"rather than just getting things done). I like to know about running linux both for desktop and server.

1. Fedora 10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Bible by Christopher Negus

2. Practical Guide to Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux: College Edition (4th Ed) by Mark G Sobell

Thanks in advance.

Hi Breezy,

I haven't read either books, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I would guess that the "bible" will have more information. It's a good thing you picked Fedora as your distro. It's certainly a good platform to learn. Because it's so bleeding edge, things don't always go as planned and you end up having to fix things. I've learned a lot on how my xserver and nvidia system work together and other things.

Ubuntu plainly works thus not a lot of things are broken. It's useful, but you don't learn much. That's just my opinion. Good luck and get used to reading forums, the IRC channels, and running "man <package>" a lot.

I have one of Christopher Negus' books and found it pretty useful (Red Hat Linux 3 Bible to be exact). Obviously it's outdated now, but most of the info in it is still very usable.

The Negus book is quite useful for a newcomer, and has various valuable tips for the more experienced as well. I'm not sure about the other.

You can always check reviews on Amazon to get a general idea, though it sometimes turns out that they don't think the same way I do (that is, the reviewers).
