F11 won't start up after updates installed

I installed updates a few days ago and now my computer just hangs. After the blue and white bar at the bottom of the screen disappears when loading F11, I get a blank screen with the following: ADDRCONF (NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready. I think this happened after I had some kernel updates installed. The only way I can get Fedora to run is by booting up with a previous version. How do I fix this? I seem to be having alot of issues with updates messing up some part of my system lately.

Same here! And it seems there are few solutions. What I get is after this blue and white bar and the login screen, the screen turns white, and the hard-drive starts racing. That's all. Nothing happens, nothing works.

This is already the case with the last 2 kernel updates. The only kernel that still works is 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.x86_64. This is the bottom one in the grub list of three latest Kernels. How do I protect this one from disappearing? Because when I see a new kernel update I first want to try that one before I lose this one!

Help! Anyone?

May it have something to do with the fact that I haven't got Compiz Fuzion installed - I think. Never did it, and the effects my computer does aren't exciting in the least...

Same here on an old inspiron Desktop. I tried rebooting in an old kernel but it still stalled after the boot logo. are you guys using raid? it might be a raid issue.

Interesting thought. I'm unaware of using RAID (Newb!). How do I check that?

Mine gets past the 3 loading bars, then just goes black when it should show the login screen.

By the way, I do have Raid 0.

raid means you are using two or more disks as one partition. if you don't know what it is you are probably not using it.

Thanks, and no. Home directory is on one large disk, filesystem (and Windoze partition) on another smaller disk.

But the Kernel still f*&*&^s up. It happened before, and two days later there was an Nvidia update, which made it work again. A week later there was a new kernel update after which it stopped working again. Would it be a thought that perhaps the Nvidia update should be undone? Or redone?

often times an nvidia kmod package will be a day or two later than the kernel update and that will give you a black screen on boot up until the kmod package is updated to match the current kernel. a way to get around this is to install the akmod-nvidia package from rpmfusion's repo. it rebuilds the kmod every time there is a kernel update so that you don't have to wait for the updated premade kmod package. if you are using rpmfusion's repo than just search for 'akmod-nvidia' in the package installer.

unfortunately the computer i noticed this on doesn't use an nvidia card so this is not the issue for me. it is a machine that i installed for a friend who is unable to fix the problem himself. also he is on vacation so i can't get onto his machine and troubleshoot for a week or so.

Thanks, I'll try that. It is indeed an nvidia issue; but nothing has come from nvidia for a week now...

When I boot the latest kernel, in the login screen I get an error warning (orange triangle in the bottom of the screen). When I click on that, I see all F11's startup comments. Between all [OK]'s, I get this:

Code:
Checking for module nvidia.ko [FAILED]
nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.29.6-217 etc etc etc x86_64 was not found [WARNING]
The nvidia driver will not be enabled until one is found [WARNING]
Driver already disabled
And when I log in subsequently, I get a white lit up screen... If someone has another solution, please post this. I'll first try jerboyd's idea.

from the sounds of it you are using the kmod-nvidia driver as well as compiz or desktop effects, is that right?

to fix this you will have to install the akmod-nvidia package from rpmfusion's repository, but because you get a white screen at login (desktop effects are enabled) you will have to boot up into the terminal. follow these instructions.

1. at boot up enter the grub menu by hitting Tab after you see your computers bios screen disappear. you will see a list of kernels, with the top kernel highlighted hit 'e'. this allows you to edit the boot options. after that scroll to the second line of the three lines and hit e again. add a space and then the number 3 to the end of that line. then hit enter and then hit b to boot. this will boot up your computer without starting X, which will get you to a command prompt.
2. login with your username and password
3. get root privileges by typing su and then your root password when prompted
4. install the akmod-nvidia package with this command 'yum install akmod-nvidia'

it will probably add some other packages because of dependencies but agree. after the installation is complete reboot your computer like you normally would. it might take a minute longer than normal because it will be building the kmod-nividia driver for the newest kernel. now you can update your kernel without having to update the nvidia driver, it will rebuild it automatically for you everytime it updates.

let me know if you have any issues

Indeed!
I followed your instructions, and all went well. Until the reboot. There now is no login screen anymore. There's just a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner... :S

Thanks for the efford; it seems there's another problem to solve now.

P.S. For the record, I use F11 x86_64

are you using compiz for your desktop effects? or are you using the built in desktop effects?

i just wanted to know if you were using compiz or not because it will help us troubleshoot. have you tried booting into any of the older kernels since you installed the akmod-nvidia package? try one of your older kernels and see if they work. if they do than it is a kernel issue and the simplest solution is to continue using one of the older kernels until a new kernel is released. this would simply involve getting root privileges in a terminal and removing the newest kernel entry from your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. then the machine would not automatically boot into it but would use the second newest kernel.

if that doesn't work than there are a couple other solutions that you could use.

1. install the proprietary Nvidia driver from the nvidia site. the downside to this is that when the kernel updates you have to manually update the driver yourself. it's not hard but takes about 10 minutes. i use this driver because i am using a specialized kernel that doesn't work with the akmod-nvidia driver.

2. disable desktop-effects and use the nouveau driver that comes with fedora. the downside to this is that there is no 3d support.

3. disable desktop-effects, remove all nvidia related packages (except xorg-x11-drv-nv the fedora nvidia driver) and try re-installing the akmod-nvidia package and rebooting.

try booting into a different kernel first, if that doesn't work than let me know which of these methods you want to try and i'll give you step by step directions.

Okay, I have had this problem before. And someone else is having this problem. See if this provides any insight: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=228878

It sounds like you've been updating your kernels automatically, but did you by chance install a 3D graphics accelerator or other driver manually?
