Windows print on Linux machine

Before you all berate me for using Windows. I don't. My wife does. I didn't marry her for her brains.

My computer is Linux (FC11). My laptop is Linux (FC10). My printer Canon MP630. Connected to my computer. Prints fine from either computer or laptop. Love it. Linux easy for printing. My boss even thinks so.

Share is enabled with all users.

I cannot get my wife's Vista/Home Basic laptop to print via FC11. Driving me mad. Have tried adding with server. nada. Tried adding with TCP/IP. nada. . smb\\Tower\printer. nothing.
http://192.168.1.2/printer nothing + every combination there of.

Why does Windows have to be so hard to use?

This blog posting seems to have a good explanation

http://bsdpants.blogspot.com/2008/01...s-to-cups.html

What you basically do is make a network printer with the Windows Printer and Faxes utility
and point it at http://[ip to cups host]:631/printers/queuenamehere

for example:

http://192.168.1.2:631/printers/BasementHPPrinter

Likely you just lacked the IPP port number "631" after the IP, it needs to be there.

I've not done this exact setup with real hardware but have done it in VirtualBox where a
XP Vm was printing to the Linux host and did it just this way (in the VirtualBox case, you use
the default VirtualBox gateway which usually is 10.0.2.2 and print to that: http://10.0.2.2:631/printers/queuename)

Obviously, she is not looking over your shoulder as you type.
Feel free to edit that, just in case. (That's written as a long time married man, not as staff--it's not an official suggestion by any means, simply the writing of someone experienced, who once complained about his lovely, brilliant wife's lack of computer understanding, and then followed up on the thread as she walked in and, inquiring sort that she was, looked over his shoulder and insisted on seeing the thread from the beginning.)

I'm trying to do the same thing-print to a shared printer on an F11 machine from Windows Vista. I've followed all the instructions above and it seems pretty straightforward, but it still isn't working so I must have something wrong. Could it be that I have the host IP wrong? I think it's 192.168.1.2 but how do I find out what it is for sure?

you should be able to ping it from the vista machine.

If the system is using only one network port, a "/sbin/ifconfig eth0" will list the IP number assigned.

One other thing - check the firewall configuration on your print server. Port 631 should be enabled
for incoming requests. I doubt that your other Linux system is using 631.

OK, that did it, you're totally my hero. It was the firewall setting. I was wrong about the IP, but only because it was the 2nd or 3rd one I tried. It seems I was right the first time and was thrown off by the firewall. Thank you very much!
