can't run games- 3D rendering not working... how to fix?

basically, i installed the linux build of "Heros of Newerth", and although it opens successfully, it's barely usable and extremely slow with 'top' showing like 95% of the CPU used by the process

$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

$ sudo lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9200M GS (rev a1)

$ uname -r # just tried yum update kernel
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.x86_64

i have a windows partition and games run fine!

wat should i do -_-

To install the nvidia drivers have a look at the nvidia thread in my signature.

cool! took a little while, but it works now on 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.x86_64

though when i boot 2.6.29.5 now, it says

Checking for module nvidia.ko: [FAILED]
nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64 was not found[WARNING]
The nvidia driver will not be enabled until one is found. [WARNING]

and the screen is kinda messed up, i guess i shouldn't have tried doing the steps installing the Nvidia packages while intermittently experimenting with booting different kernels =\

[lamdk@localhost:~] $ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 9200M GS/PCI/SSE2
GL_NV_depth_buffer_float, GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp,
GL_NV_vertex_program3, GL_NVX_conditional_render,

[lamdk@localhost:~] $ lsmod | grep -i nvidia
nvidia 10317848 29
i2c_core 33504 5 nvidia,i2c_i801,nouveau,drm,i2c_algo_bit

If you want to switch kernels first install the akmod-nvidia as described in that thread. It automatically creates the kmod if it is missing. It is a good idea anyway as then you don't need to worry about kernel updates. The new kmod doesn't always come out at the same time as the kernel.
