Why is openjdk useless compared to the one from java.com?

I thought java was opensourced, yet the Cisco ASDM (which is java based) is completely unuseable when using openjava. When I use the version from java.com, everything works as expected, including the browser plugin.

Just because something is open-sourced doesn't mean that other implementations of it will be the same. It takes a lot of work to implement something as complex as the JDK.

So you're saying that FOSS is incapable of releasing a functional JRE? This is surprising considering that everything else in Fedora/Linux works very well.

No, I'm not saying that. It just takes some work, which requires people working on it. Would you be willing to contribute to the OpenJDK project?

I'd love to, but I only understand PHP. Thanks for the clarification.

Cisco's ASDM has had issues even with sun's java

http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/runny-no...troubles-31553

It's probably written by some useless java newbie and not fully standards compliant

For what it's worth (sorry Rahul, far too lazy to take useful notes) I'm finding iced tea to work with more and more programs with each iteration.

Looking at notes for Fedora 389 server (nee Directory Server) it seems that previously, one needed Sun Java (oh, the irony) but that iced tea is working there as well .

Hi,

389 directory server was in the past a enormous body of proprietary code under the name of Netscape Directory Server. It was bought by Red Hat and open sourced a while back. That explains its dependency on a specific Java implementation. It took a lot of work to get into be compliant with FHS and pass the Fedora package review process as well. The latest version of Java in Fedora is called OpenJDK and is certified to be 100% compliant

Of course, in reality, there are implementation specific quirks in some programs. These are bugs that should be fixed in the programs themselves but some of them can be worked around in OpenJDK. If you come across any of these, do report them regardless of whether they are actually included in Fedora or not.

I don't know why non-Sun java is even distributed with Fedora. It is annoying to have to fix Java every time a new Fedora version released. What is gained by distributing these non-Sun Javas? They don't seem to provide any advantage, on the contrary, they are just impediments to getting things done.

@kurtrisser, OpenJDK distributed in Fedora *is* from Sun. If you have a specific problem, file a bug report.

Kurtrisser,
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Proprietary

Non-proprietary is the goal for Fedora. Nothing proprietary should be in Fedora at install time. You can install anything, your choice.

Sun's Java is proprietary
Sun's helping on OpenJDK is non-proprietary.

This got hyped up since SCO made us all freaked out, suing IBM, etc.

Re: Why is openjdk useless compared to the one from java.com?

Sorry I'm a newbie, trying to install SUN JDK, I see Fedora is not quoted as supported system by SUN, but Red Hat is, does that mean it will work? or not?
thanks

Re: Why is openjdk useless compared to the one from java.com?

Sun's Java .rpm has installed successfully for me in Fedora. But, with the advancements made in OpenJDK, I no longer need it.

Link to current download page.
