Fedora 11 and kmod-nvidia

Hello,

I can't get the Nvidia legacy drivers running. I've the following packages, which are the right ones for my kernel:
Quote:
[root@homebox crash]# yum list installed |grep nvidia
akmod-nvidia.i686 185.18.36-1.fc11 @rpmfusion-nonfree-updates
kmod-nvidia-2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAE.i686
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia.i586 185.18.36-1.fc11 @rpmfusion-nonfree-updates
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i586 185.18.36-1.fc11 @rpmfusion-nonfree-updates
and I added nouveau to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and created a new mkinitrd which boots. But the X11 window system doesn't start up, so I checked if nouveau is loaded and it's really blacklisted. When I manually modprobe nvidia kernel driver I get the following error:

Quote:
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAE/extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko): No such device
and some warnings from the module that 185.18.36 doesn't support my CPU.

My video card is:
Quote:
[root@homebox crash]# lspci | grep 01:00.0
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)
Try to figure this out for two days now. Rpmfusion is really frustrating for me

Adding vmalloc=256m to the kernel parameters and Option "ConstantFrameRateHint" "True" in xorg.conf also didn't help.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Couldn't figure out what the problem is. kmod-nvidia didn't work for me at all.

For those who will find this thread by Google: Your only hope is to use the driver directly from nvidia.com and reinstall it after every kernel update.

I switched back to Zenwalk

I tried the same thing multiple times, had a Nvidia G-Force PCI card in my machine. I got kmod-nvidia to work perfectly with all Fedoras up to 10, with 11 I never once got it working. Then I installed a new board, with ATI Radeon onboard sound, and couldn't get those drivers to work with 11 either. Do the install, and boot to a black screen. I wonder if I should try to install the drivers in 12? Did they get this issue fixed?

Here is a tip for you Fedora software coders:
There is a little distro named PC Linux, http://pclinuxos.com which is RPM based and comes in Gnome and KDE. It has a little utility, in the utilities folder on the desktop. With this utility, you can easily install either Nvidia or ATI drivers, the correct ones, and it works every time.

Personally, I think Fedora would be great with this utility, how about the rest of you?
