Glad you got it working, just in case though, make sure you un-mute everything using alsamixer.
Especially if you want output going to more than one place.

Pulse seems to assume you only want output going to one place at a time...

I had the same problem.

Digital audio (IEC958) used to work fine in F11, but stopped to work after upgraded to F12 with preupgrade. Still in Windows XP the digital output was working still w/o problems, so I knew it cannot be a hardware problem.

After some hours of testing, degugging and .....

It seems the problem was F12 installation had replaced /etc/pulse/daemon.conf file. The old one was renamed as daemon.conf.old
Running diff between them, I remembered that I once in F9 or F10 had put "default-sample-rate = 48000" in daemon.conf file. By default that rate is 44100 I guess. Having 48000 there and restarting pulseaudio, made suddenly digital out audio working again (and not needing even to reboot).
I haven't rebooted yet, so I am not sure if this really was the thing which solved the problem or some other zillion of other tricks I tried before that.

Also "default-sample-channels = 6" in daemon.conf seams the right thing to have there.
Now after, googling "default-sample-rate = 48000" seems to confirm that was the problem.
