Installing Windows w/ Fedora --STUCK
Hi all,
I, (on my hp 530) use F10 and winxp, dual-boot. The problem is that recently my windows was hit by a bad virus and now i need to format/re-install winxp, WITHOUT harming my F10 partitions... After I put in the winxp CD, after a momentary message "Setup is inspecting your blah blah..." I get an eternal black screen. Now why I'm posting this here(rather than a win forum) is because I searched those forums and they said it had something to do with Windows not understanding complicated partition patterns which are brought by Fedora(any linux, the ext* and swap FS types)... So I was just hoping if anybody's had the same experience or anyways, I could use ANY help/suggestions.
Thanks in advance for replying and in real time for reading

One good reason to always have Windoz on a separate drive.
Just a question; how did you install Windoz in the first place?
Meaning; you did it once with no problem; or is it that you installed F10 after you installed Windoz?
I have never had any good luck with installing Windoz on a single drive partition; if I install Windoz first then install Fx then Windoz will never see that drive again; that said what I would do is fix the Windoz install; it can be done without a fresh install; first remove the virus; then un-install all SP and patches; then pop the Windoz disk in with a newer SP version; then do an upgrade; hence why I said to un-install the SP; Windoz will not upgrade a newer version. I had to do this on lap tops where I didn't have a choice but to use one drive; putting it on an external drive is another option in this case.
If your using Windoz for Gaming; VM isn't an option; without knowing what your using Windoz for, suggesting you use a VM or WINE is just an option you have to decide.

Hello yati,
Yes. Lots of people. That issue with the XP CD has been discussed on the Internet since XP has been around.

Okay, but it's not really good news. I mean, the workarounds are somewhat hard to do making them worth doing only when the Fedora system is extremely valuable for some reason. Here is what I know about the subject, but it may make you want to just re-install everything... http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=167302

hi jflesher, yes this box came with winxp, 3 logical partitions, and I used the last one(which was larger than the other two) to install Fedora... I already have Wine. I only need Windows to run visual c++ and just BECAUSE i use windows, i play Counter Strike (awesome game!) ... and both of these break on Wine.
just out of curiosity and out of topic, too, is there a game like CStrike for linux??
And don't worry, once I'm done with backups, I'll try to install XP and will let y'all know what happened.

I also use VC++, but got into C#, and now that I can use that in MonoDevelop; I never go back to VS; I know that VC++ or C# for that matter, are worlds apart from the Linux counter part; but I'm a die hard Unix person; not that I haven't logged my hours in using MS, just that it made me appreciate Unix even more. But in all true; I have another Development machine with a dual boot CentOS 5.4 and Windows 2003 Server; but x64; I have VS setup on it, just in case I want to use it for what ever reason; almost forgot; this Development machine also has a dual boot; F11 x64 and Windows 2003 Server x64; besides doing updates to it, I rarely boot into Windows and tend to forget its there.
I don't play many games, besides Free-cell and Chess; but you might find this link of interest http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1/6
Not a bad time to upgrade to F11; with F12 due out very soon and the end of work on F10.
