wireless cards that work on fedora

I've currently got the beta of fedora 12 installed, hope to upgrade that once the final release comes out.

I'm having so many problems getting wireless to work. I've got a edimax ew-7711utn wireless adaptor. It doesn't work. Really what I want is to take it back and get a wireless card that will work.

Can anyone suggest some cards for me? Please?

This question has been asked many times and it is hard to answer as most cards can be made to work. It depends on the wifi chip used. Many adapters change chips from time to time.

An better path is to find out what you have and look for instruction so to set it up. In a terminal type lsusb and look for the wifi and report back.

It's just frustrating when you buy something that says it's linux compatible and it doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be much help available for this device.

Here is what I got when I typed in lsusb

Code:
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 7392:7711
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 04f3:0210 Elan Microelectronics Corp. AM-400 Hama Optical Mouse

It may turn out to be one of those difficult ones in Fedora. You can get some ideas by searching with Google and restrict to certain distro sites. I saw at least one Arch Linux thread where someone with a similar Edimax device (7392:7717) got it going with a source driver from Ralink. They edited a header file which listed the 7392:7711 and added their 7392:7717. That makes me think it might work for your device. Just an idea. I don't use or know much about the Ralink drivers.

Yes, it is. But it doesn't always mean that you can just plug it in and it goes. Not all distros necessarily have what it needs built in. Unfortunately. To me, that appears to be the state of the world at the moment. For the longest time, we were lucky to have drivers since nobody was thinking about Linux when they designed and manufactured a piece of hardware. That doesn't help you, I know. But in general, things are looking up. I think Edimax has a reputation for supporting Linux. And other companies are beginning to create Linux drivers for their devices which, let's face it, are intended for Windows.

Get an error when I type this.

lspci -nn | grep -i -e network -e wireless

It doesn't like the -e option. Invalid option --e

I'm going to have a go and try a dlink pci card. I don't know if dlink are better supported but I'll have a go.

Thanks for all your help. Maybe I'd have better luck if I used windows and ran fedora in a vm.

Edit: It worked!!!! I don't believe it!!!

I don't know why I didn't think of using this card before. It's been lying around forgotten and unused.

Okay. Good. But just for the record, -e is a valid grep option. You said...

Two dashes will make it invalid.

It's not so much the brand of the card as it is the wireless chipset it uses. Brands sometimes use different chipsets. And it's not unheard of for a particular model of a brand to change to a different chipset. That's why is kinda difficult to recommend wireless cards by brand name.
