You're not using Windows you know.

Have you tried typing avg or man avg?

Thumbs up

Dear miros84,
I am providing a link below, where an "informed" discussion took place(in fedoraforum.org) whether a fedora user needs an "A-V"! To sum up 1)be wary of unsigned packages for download,
2) Do not browse the net as superuser(very difficult as the gurus say,but adding your name to a configured "sudoers file"MAY be of help!
3)What we need is a root-kit detector, the recommended ones being--A)Chroot and B) Rkhunter.
4)The default Firewall SHOULD be properly "configured",otherwise it's as good as a wet tissue paper and a raging flu!
5)The only role of an A-V (IMO) in fedora is not to pass on viruses and trojans to friends of yours using "Windows"! i am a senior member in techguy.org,advising on "security" and would not recommend AVG(even for Windows), as many posts were from those who installed AVG! Please peruse the link below: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=228763

When I tried AVG for Linux about 4 months ago, it was a command line utility. I think the command was avgscan. The trial version apparently doesn't have the ability to remove/heal infected files. Saved the scan output and deleted the files manually with a bash script. Total rubbish!

It looks like you need to buy it.

As far as I'm aware, AVG for Linux is targeted at the professional who'll use it on a server to prevent viruses from being passed on to Windows users, not for the typical end user. I don't see any need for it under Linux.

Even under Windows AV is of questionable use, most viruses can be avoided but being careful about what software one installs and locking the user down i.e. not using an administrator account for most things i.e. browsing the Internet; unfortunately the last option will stop some old software from running but it's a small price to pay, besides a VM could be used for old programs.

if you really feel that you need a Linux AV product, I would recommend the following:

http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_...d_fplinux.html

But even with this product, its purpose is mostly to protect Windows computers. But if it makes you feel better...

HTH,

Jim Dishaw

After reading the thread linked by vyyver, I installed rkhunter and ran it. Root got a nice email:
Code:
Message 1:
From root@localhost.localdomain Tue Dec 15 16:30:28 2009
Return-Path: <root@localhost.localdomain>
From: root <root@localhost.localdomain>
Date: Tue, 15 Dec 2009 16:30:27 -0800
To: root@localhost.localdomain
Subject: [rkhunter] Warnings found for Mobile-PC
User-Agent: Heirloom mailx 12.4 7/29/08
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Status: R

Please inspect this machine, because it may be infected.
so I checked the log file. Two hidden directories, /dev/.mdadm and /etc/.java, were found and not whitelisted. /dev/.mdadm sounds like it's part of the raid package, but I'm not sure if /etc/.java is from Sun or openjdk. My guess is it should be whitelisted along with /dev/.mdadm.

The other two warnings were more of a surprise. For Apache, I got this message:
Application 'httpd', version '2.2.13', is out of date, and possibly a security risk.

And for OpenSSH I got:
Application 'sshd', version '5.2p1', is out of date, and possibly a security risk.

Are those two versions really security risks? I'm running fully updated 64 bit F12.

P.S. This post probably belongs in the Security thread, but the linked thread there is over a year old. Feel free to move it if that thread is more appropriate.

Thanks,
dd_wizard

It does make me feel better knowing that I'm not a vector for infection. It's so embarrassing to be advocating safe computing and what not, only to be greeted by the blaring alarms of an AV after plugging in your thumb drive/external HDD into somebody's computer.

Hello
I use AVG on my computer.
I run it this way:

Code:
avgscan -arc /home/miros
So, I found what in folder miros I had 4 virus that I put to test the antivirus.
When scanning finished, It says it found the virus, but havenot got any option to delete it?
I scan again later and the virus is still there.
How can I delete it with AVG. Is there some option?

miros84, are you using the paid version or the trial version? As I said earlier, the trial version doesn't allow you to remove/heal infected files.
