Quick pulse audio/alsa question

It it possible to, and how can I get, one class of clients (like vlc and xmms) to go to one audio device and yet another (like firefox and the system sounds) to go to another?

I have a soundcard which has both an analog and digital output, and I want xmms and vlc to to my stereo via the digital ouptut, and my system sounds and firefox output to go to my desktop speakers through the analog device.

I have already used Phonon configuration Module (System settings -> Advanced -> Multimedia) to direct the system sounds to the analog device, but have had no luck with firefox output as it still goes to the digital device output, which is the Pulse default.

I'm on FC10 with alsa v1.0.17 and pulse version 0.9.14 with an ICEnsenble 1724 audio card.

Any ideas?
