Gnome Panel Remove

How do I delete the top panel with gnome? The 'Delete this Panel' option is greyed out.

Re: Gnome Panel Remove

That sounds like it's your last panel. I've never been able to delete the last one, either. Are you trying to replace gnome panel with another panel/dock? I used the how-to on AWN's wiki page to make AWN replace gnome panel.

Re: Gnome Panel Remove

Thank you, that worked. For anyone that is curious on how to do it, install gconf-editor, run it, navigate to desktop > gnome > session > required_componets, and then erase the value in panel.

Re: Gnome Panel Remove

In addition, you can change the required component from gnome panel to something else with gconf-editor. Even if you do that, switching window managers, say from metacity to compiz or mutter, restarts gnome panel. You can get rid of the unwanted panel with "sudo killall gnome-panel".

Re: Gnome Panel Remove

I would like to completely remove gnome-panel from the system but keep the gnome-applets because I use them with avant window navigator that is my main system navigator instead of gnome-panel. Is this possible?

Edit: Got help at another forum.

Re: Gnome Panel Remove

Thanks dustinw for your advice. I was able to follow your instructions on my FC13 installation and it worked perfectly. I am using cairo-dock as a replacement for the gnome panel for now, and the top panel just was bothering me. The old value was "gnome-panel" in case anyone was curious or need to put the value back in the future.
