Killed my Nvidia Driver, F13
I'm using Fedora 13 64-bit, and I had the Proprietary driver installed and working. I had to reboot my computer for some hardware maintenance, and my Nvidia driver is no longer working. I have had quite a bit of experience manually installing the driver (I did it on this Fedora install), but it's mainly with Ubuntu.
Here's what I did originally:
1) Tried to install the driver manually, but got the Nouveau warning
2) Disabled Nouveau (following some instructions online)
3) Installed the Nvidia driver
Everything worked properly until I reboot last night. I must have installed a kernel update, which caused the problem, but I can't reinstall the driver. Here's what I did:
1) Installed DKMS because I know this should correct the problem in the future, but I know that I need to get the driver working before DKMS will save me next time
2) Installed the Nvidia driver manually. Install was successful, and I had the installer configure xorg.conf
3) On reboot I get (when I press Esc to see boot messages), that Nvidia.ko could not be loaded. Xorg falls back to vesa, and I cen get into KDE.
At this point, I discovered the kmod-nvidia package, and although it has an older driver 173.xx (256.xx is the newest version from Nvidia), seems like the best option. The problem is that I had the Fedora Testing repo enabled, and that's where the troublesome Kernel upgrade came from. Now kmod-nvidia refuses to install since the dependent kernel is older than my installed kernel.
I tried to uninstall the 'kernel' package and reinstall it, thinking that it would revert to the normal Fedora Udates Kernel. However, this didn't work.
I'm stuck in a situation where manually installing the Nvidia driver doesn't seem to add the Nvidia.ko module to my Kernel. And, I can't install kmod-nvidia because my kernel from the Fedora Testing repo is too new.
I would rather install the driver manually, but nvidia-kmod would work as well. Is anybody able to help me?
Thanks for the help. Logs are below.

Re: Killed my Nvidia Driver, F13
Whenever there is a kernel update that does not have a matching kmod-nvidia, what I do is change the default= line in /boot/grub/grub.conf to point to the previous kernel say from default=0 change it to default=1. Or you can do it on the fly by pressing a key early in the boot sequence to display the grub boot menu, hit the down arrow key to select previous kernel and hit enter to boot.

Re: Killed my Nvidia Driver, F13
Another option is to install the RPMFusion repository RPMs ( www.rpmfusion.org), then try "yum upgrade kmod-nvidia" and see if it will upgrade the nVidia module and kernel both to the same version. This should also disable Noveau as well for you, in /etc/grub.conf. Then reboot and it should have already put the new kernel as the default, so that it will boot back up and hopefully run the correct kernel and nVidia driver.

I only have two kernels available, and I tried everything on both of them.

I don't mean to be rude, but did you even read my post?
I feel like I just need to revert the "Testing" kernel that's installed, and get back to the "Updates" one. Then, I should be able to install kmod-nvidia. While I can boot the kernel from "Updates," I can't install packages that depend on it since I have a newer version installed.

Re: Killed my Nvidia Driver, F13
I think you might be working to hard to get the results that you want. You posted at the end of the day and now it is morning. I'm sure there will be someone that can help you. I'm just curious though, did you check this thread:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=204752
Oh, one thing I've notice about Fedora is that if you have trouble and use Google, it usually points you right back here. Just a thought.

Re: Killed my Nvidia Driver, F13
You need some help from the guys in the Rawhide area of this forum. And, I think you can enable the rawhide repos and just pull your kernels from there. Not sure how Nvidia works with that. They've been working a lot with the Nouveau driver lately in a big hope to get away from the proprietary drivers.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM CDT ---------- Previous post was at 10:35 AM CDT ----------
Oh, have you looked at Leigh's guide to Nvidia for Rawhide?

Re: Killed my Nvidia Driver, F13
Try installing akmod-nvidia. Be warned, it needs kernel-devel, but doesn't list it as a dependency, so you'll have to install it yourself. Then, when you reboot, the akmod will find that you don't have a kmod-nvidia to match your kernel and build you one on-the-fly. It takes a couple of minutes, but once it's done, you're set to go.
