Gnome desktop icon quirk?

The Computer, Home, and Trash icons that are on my desktop all have that little "read-only" icon overlay on them. The icons displayed normally at first, but after a little while the "read-only" icon shows up... Anybody know what's happening? This only happens when I log in as a regular user; if I log in as root and startx, the icons display properly.

Thanks

edit: found some pics in the gnome screenshot gallery to better illustrate what I'm talking about...
like mine:

I know it's not a huge deal, but it really bugs me so any help is appreciated. thanks again...
