command line for booting

Folks:

After I installed Fedora 2, GRUB did not start. (I did not know why). But I have heard that one can use installation CD to boot to Linux. However, I do not know the exact parameters. Someone said, it should be something like:

boot: linux=/dev/hda4

I tried, it did not work. Does anyone know the exact command to do so ?

Thanks.
