Re: No xorg.conf

Hello Anniedog

I remembered the problems I had with my 7300LE sometime overnight. It was always that it wouldn't work with the "nv" driver. It just went black screen and wouldn't display anything until you had installed the current "nvidia" driver - whichever that was at the time. I suspect that I've really not tried since the "nouveau" driver became current.

In any event, I've just taken a look in the xorg log files and it says:

Quote:
[ 26.036] dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: miEmptyData
[ 26.038] (EE) Failed to load..........
I wonder if that means anything more to you than me.

However, as I'm running the 173xx driver on that machine now, I think I ought to go back to the 260 driver, which should work with this card, and see what that says. I'll see if I can do that later.

Re: No xorg.conf

I had always used the kmod divers, livna etc before. Basically always been following Leigh's guides. Though I do remember that drivers can be obtained directly from nvidia, well I think so :-). This may be an issue not related to nvidia but a fedora specific one. Like you I have no idea what the outputs really mean. Probably someone out there that does I bet.

Re: No xorg.conf

I have the 7300 nvidia card in mine as well, and have no problems running F13 with the nvidia drivers. I am not using the 173xx version of the drivers, I am using the later akmod-nvidia (I believe the 260 series drivers now)

What I had to do was install the akmod-nvidia and other packages in Leigh's guide.
blacklist nouveau
run dracut -f /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

reboot and it worked fine

Only problem I am getting is an error in my xorg.0.log file

[ 64.856] RANDR failure: 8 (extension base 177)

The odd part is, it says earlier in the log that RANDR is loaded, and I don't seem to have any problems in use, so I just live with the error.

Are you running x86_64 or i686. I could never get my F13 x86_64 to run at all with the nvidia? Though I note you used akmod, and in fairness after 3 reinstalls on F13 I just gave up. Just thought I would wait for F14 seems I may have to wait a little longer though.

Re: No xorg.conf

Hello DBelton

Thanks for the thoughts.

Still no joy with the 7300LE I'm afraid. The dracut business isn't specified for F14, which is what I am using and the nvidia-xconfig seems to produce a file "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf" by itself.

However, I tried the dracut out of curiosity and it made no difference.

There are many variants of the 7300 nvidia chipset. Interestingly (to me in any case) this particular machine has a 7300GT. I've just tried that and the nvidia driver installs and runs without a problem. Funnily enough though, it won't allow me to enable the KDE desktop effects due to unspecified "technical issues". It does allow me to run "glxgears" as does the 6150SE. But that latter card will allow me to enable the desktop effects. So I don't think it's the actual methodology that's a problem.

I might take a look at some more log files Wednesday or at the weekend.

Re: No xorg.conf

I didn't have to do the dracut mess with F14 either.

The nvidia install is really very straight forward on F14, unlike previous releases.

And yes, I have the 7300GT as well. so that may be the issue. I wonder what the difference in the actual chipset is between the 7300LE and the 7300GT...

You did add the 2 lines in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file so it can find the correct module path as stated in Leigh's guide? That might explain the problem with the KDE desktop effects if you didn't do that. Seems that there is a problem with the xconfig-nvidia at the moment and it doesn't work properly on F14 and it won't put those lines in the xorg.conf file for you, you have to add them manually.

and anniedog, I have several different machines with a 7300 card in them. one runs i686 and the other runs x86_64. Possibly the difference is the 7300GT versus the 7300LE cards

(and yes, I always use the akmod package so I don't have to wait for the kmod package to hit the repo before I update the kernel. With the akmod, it compiles the kernel module automatically until the kmod is updated in the repo.

Re: No xorg.conf

Hello DBelton

Yes, I added the two lines you mention. Ostensibly, the installation is the same as the 6150SE on another machine that just works.

I've just managed to get hold of an 8400GS to put in, in place of the 7300GT and that just works as well. Though I'm disappointed that I don't seem to be able to find the mouse gestures to activate the desktop cube.
