Angry Urgent: Kernel Lag

I compiled the 2.6.36 kernel with the default f13.config options because the f14 kernel doesn't allow me to control my laptop's brightness. I got the catalyst10.10 drivers to work and the brightness control work too. However, when I choose the 2.6.36 kernel from GRUB there is a 20 second delay before the verbose boot begins. This is not normal and I'd really like to get it sorted out. Usually boots take 10% of the battery while after that the battery drains slowly. I don't want this delay to eat another 10% of the battery.

The only reason I use verbose boot is because I think it looks nice.

Help urgently needed. Any suggestions helpful.
