Latest update hosed my system?

Just installed the latest update (~9:45 EST) and when it rebooted it never got beyond the Fedora 14 stripe along the bottom of the screen. Did a warm boot and same result. Powered off and on with same result. Just hangs and never gets to the (Gnome) desktop. Did notice that the Fedora 14 stripe at the bottom is now doing multiple flashes, where it used to just dim before proceeding to the desktop. Booted Puppy (USB) to send this message, so hardware seems OK, though could be some kind of HD failure.

Re: Latest update hosed my system?

Probably failed to initialize GDM because kmod-nvidia's yet to be updated for the new kernel. That should happen in a day or so, from past experience. In the meantime, the previous kernel should boot just fine. BTW, in anticipation of the glitch, I installed the akmod-nvidia per Leigh's Guide, but that wouldn't build as long as it's searching for the kmod-nvidia first.

Re: Latest update hosed my system?

I had precisely the same problem with the kernel update, and I was using the kmod-nvidia driver. Thanks bob for the info.

Re: Latest update hosed my system?

Yes, thanks for the info. How do I boot the "old" kernel so I don't have to do a reinstall?

Re: Latest update hosed my system?

You should be able to bring up Grub's menu by hitting any key (other than "enter") as it starts to boot. Then select the older kernel there. For the future, you might want to go into /boot/grub/grub.conf and advance "timeout" to something like "10" and put a "#" in front of "hiddenmenu" so that the menu shows up at every boot.

Question Re: Latest update hosed my system?

I tried to boot with Inittab set to level 3. then logon to regular ID and issue startx command.
Result is a message from X that "/dev/nvidiactl" cannot be opened. Therefore no usable device .
Message is echoed in Xorg.0.log file.
