Question about video playback Mplayer/Totem etc.

Hello!
I'm kind of new to linux, tried it back and forth for a couple of years, trying Fedora right now and liking it

Usually similair things are answered in FAQ and already on forum, but I've looked and searched and also tried this solution (didn't work), http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=256543
Though my general goal, being able to watch video's, all kinds, work with VLC. I still want Totem and Mplayer to work, and thought by knowing why they don't might learn something.

Whenever I try to get Totem to play any kind it gives me a msg about needing additional plugins, like AC3 and DivX mpeg4 ver5 etc. And when I open anything in mplayer nothing happens, it freezes. So thought maybe something is wrong with my codecs? =P

Everything works in VLC though, but while I'm asking, hard to describe but playback in VLC has this kind of flickering sometimes that is hardly noticable but very annoying, and it feels like audio is out of sync but when reading the lips you can hardly notice it. Same if I play divx, xvid, dvd,mp4, not much at all, you still feel like iẗ́s something weird and wondering if anyone know if it's something common problem that can be solved.

Thank you, and sorry if it's been answered before.

Re: Question about video playback Mplayer/Totem etc.

Did you look in the Fedora Set-Up Guides? I'm a fan of AutoTen, which can handle just about any codec out there.

And, actually our FAQ is about how to migrate within the Forum. We do have a Guides & Solutions Forum that handles most things too. Got to remember that we're an independent Forum, not part of the FedoraProject (which also has a link up there)

Re: Question about video playback Mplayer/Totem etc.

Here is a guide how to install autoten.

Another way would be to enable the rpmfusion repos:
Code:
su -
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
If this repos are enabled it should find and install the necessary codecs.

If there are still videoplayback problems, it's maybe because of bad videocarddrivers. I don't know how the Noveau driver (Open Source driver for NVIDIA cards) would behave when playing videos...
If this visual problems still exist: What is your graphiccard and driver?

I would suggest you look into this guide and in particular the sections about MP3 and media players

I didn't mean to imply anything about the FAQ, wrote that incase someone wanted to reply and point out that the answer is in a FAQ or obtainable by searching the forums xD

And it seems I've enabled rpm fusion, when trying to install I get the message "package rpmfusion-free-release-14-0.4.noarch (which is newer than rpmfusion-free-release-12-3.noarch) is already installed"
I have an ATI Radeon HD5800, and installed drivers from http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon . They seem to work generally very well so far.

And thank you for the links! Seems like great guide to follow to set it all upp good, though I'm not sure how to ask the question, but from previous experience with Windows, installing several codec packs can screw things up badly, so I like to make sure it's all organized etc, is there any place I can review what I have installed? And also before following guides on installing codecs, should I delete previous installments?

Thank you.

Re: Question about video playback Mplayer/Totem etc.

Well, you can check out your installed packages a number of ways. I'm still using this (signing into a terminal as "su -", password first) then....
Quote:
rpm -qa --last | tac
That will list all your installed packages, from oldest to newest.

And, as you can see, where there are issues, such as a different version, yum will pop up a notation about it (rpmfusion version) so I wouldn't worry about conflicts that you had in Windows. Actually, the codecs that you'd previously installed were probably "correct", just missing some libs or other components to work properly.
