Vbox + Windows 7

Hi all,

I just created a brand fresh instalation of F14 i686

I am trying to put Windows 7 in a Virtual Box...

In Virtual Machine Manager I created a new host, assigned 2 CPU 1GB RAM and Installed from DVD without any problem....

The problem is that when finished the installation and tried to reboot it doesn't it checks BIOS and stays in

Booting from HDD (I assigned a 20GB for the virtual machine )

Any Ideas why is this happening? Can I check any logs? the strange is that is doesn't seem to detect any error, simply doesn't boot...

My Fedora System is in a RAID0 (Software)

So I have

/boot in sda
swap in sda
/root md0 (70GB software raid)
/home md1(400GB software raid)

My Fedora system has been running without any problems so I don't think HDD config is the problem....

Please help me.... because with so many partition I can't create another Primary partition to install Windows in the spare partition....

You could check /var/log for any error messages related to VMM.
When I tried to install XP in a VM it came up with an error about some file which was actually on the cd; I reinstalled and it worked fine. Reinstall Win7 and see what happens.

Re: Vbox + Windows 7

I seem to recall that I had to fiddle with one of the configuration options (IO APIC or one of the Processor or Acceleration options, IIRC) to get Windows 7 to boot after I installed it in VirtualBox. I don't recall the details, though.

Re: Vbox + Windows 7

You have to select a different IO APIC setting in the system options of the Virtual Box manager. It probably told you to do this when you selected slid the indicator to 2 processors. Alternatively, you could set it to one processor and it will probably boot.

Incidentally, windows 7 in a virtualbox has extremely impoverished video capabilities.

Re: Vbox + Windows 7

Uhmm I had it on both one or two processors and nothing booted :S but install

Can you guys explain more that option you are talking about ? I'm quite newbie with VMachines.

It-s the third time I tried to install Win7, is it really worth to just get a Win XP install ?

Other optiion would it be to get a logical partition in NTFS that I have in the extended part of the hard drive (not raid) and create a LVM to install windows.... would this be possible ?

But I'd prefer a VM

Re: Vbox + Windows 7

I would suggest putting the windows 7 disc in as if you are going to boot the virtual machine and fix your install with the windows disc options. you will end up using bootrec.exe and fixmbr commands so google that. This will put the bootloader on your virtual drive.

Anyway, this isn't a Linux issue. So, you should probably look for help on the virtualbox forums or windows 7 forums.

I meant that sometimes installs go wrong, not that you should use XP Since it hasn't worked 3 times I suspect the media might be corrupted. Is there any way you can reburn the ISO?
