    get skype working

    hi all,

I (and maybe some others) had trouble with skype:

Microphone is working but not with skype (-testcall).

    Solution:

    alsamixer -V capture -c OUR_CARD_NUMBER

your cardnumber is normally 0, if you have one sound card.

select now mic and everything is working:

    │ L R
    │ ------ ------ CAPTUR ------

    │ Line CD < Mic >

You most choose mic with your arrow keys and then press space.
    Exit by press esc.

    Have fun

    [root@localhost ~]# alsamixer -V capture -c OUR_CARD_NUMBER
    wrong -c argument 'OUR_CARD_NUMBER'

    wrong argument ?
what are you supposed to put in ?
I tried it just with -c, but needs an argument

    [root@localhost ~]# alsamixer -V capture -c
alsamixer: option requires an argument -- c
    AlsaMixer v1.0.14rc2
    Usage: alsamixer [-h] [-c <card: 0...7>] [-D <mixer device>] [-g] [-s] [-V <view>] [-a <abst>]

I don't seem to have a problem with the microphone. I do have a problem with the sounds that should be playing when Skype dials, etc. I don't hear anything, but the calls seem to go through fine.

    Any hints?

sdowney717, the answer is in the initial message. "your cardnumber is normally 0, if you have one sound card." so you would substitute "0" for "OUR_CARD_NUMBER" although the following messages say that you may need to try other numbers if you have a non-standard setup.

Put 0 (zero) in place of OUR_CARD_NUMBER, that is:
    alsamixer -V capture -c 0

Be sure that in Tools / Options / Sounds all checkboxes are checked and that when you press the "play" button beside each one of them you hear a sound. If not then you need to select them: they are usually all under ...skype/sounds/

To know your skype installation directory run
    rpm -ql skype

Okay. That worked. I had the sound boxes all checked and wasn't getting any sounds. That threw me as on the unmentionable OS, they all worked on install.

I had to manually go and find the proper .wav file for each one, although I couldn't find the dialtone one. It wasn't in the directory with all of the other sounds.

Anyway, they all work now so I can go and fix my laptop where it also hasn't worked.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

I did this once at fc6 - and the system keeps this settings for me.

Which fedora version are you running?

Acutally I dont have an answer because I have no linux at work and
the man page ( http://linux.die.net/man/1/alsamixer ) does not tell me something
    about this issue.

I'll check later at home - i guess it is just a quick change in the alsa .conf file...

I use fedora 7 and yes, I am sure it loses the setting, unless I am doing sth wrong.

it seems now that I take a closer look that alsamixer does not store settings in general...

does it have to do with SELinux, or sth?
