F15 crashed after May 6 update, please HELP!

    Hi,

I was running F15 beta Gnome i686 on a AMD64 PC with Nvidia 7300GT. After today's update and upon rebooting, all I got is a black screen with the following text:

    Starting LSB: the CUPS scheduler
Starting LSB: Link Layer Discovery Protocol Agent Daemon
Starting LSB: start and stop sendmail
Starting LSB: processor frequency scaling support
Started LSB: Install coredump handler which saves segfault data
Started LSB: Mount and unmount network filesystem
Starting LSB: Starts and stops login and scanning of iSCSI devices
Started LSB: install coredump handler which saves segfault data
Started LSB: start and stop the MD software RAID monitor
Started LSB: Link Layer Discovery Protocol Agent Daemon
    Started LSB: the CUPS scheduler
Started LSB: started and stop sendmail
Started LSB: starts and stop login and scanning of iSCSI devices
Started LSB: mount and unmount network filesystem
Starting SYSV: enable monthly update of smolt
Starting SYSV: Starting permit user sessions
Starting SYSV: started permit user sessions
Started SYSV: enable monthly update of smolt
Starting SYSV: late initscript for live image
    starting /etc/rc.local Compatibility
    starting /etc/rc.local Compatibility
Starting Wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to quit
Started SYSV: late initscript for live image

Then all I can see is a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

Could you help me fix this problem so that I can log in with my userid and password as before? I am very reluctant to reinstall F15 beta.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Hi everyone,

My system crashed as indicated above, i.e. more or less the same screen messages if I boot into the following kernels:

    Latest: 2.6.38.5-22.fc15.i686
    Earlier: 2.6.38.4-20.fc15.i686

However, it boots OK into the original kernel 2.6.38.3-18.fc15.i686 when I first installed F15 Beta. Perhaps I should hold off updating the system until AFTER May 24, the tentative release date of F15.

    What do you suggest?

Re: F15 crashed after May 6 update, please HELP!

I confirm in my Post # 1 that there is a problem booting into the first 2 kernels similar to those of ausadl.

Yesterday's list of updates was long, not sure if the problem we're having is due to gnome, nvidia or kernel updates.

Is there any log that I/we can post to help with debugging or tracking down the cause of the problem?

    you can look in
    Code:
    dmesg
Or look in /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/messages

ok, I got it up and running .... I think it has something to do with nvidia (not 100% sure). This is what I did:

    1. got into linux rescue
    2. cd /etc/X11
    3. mv xorg.xonf xorg.conf.backup
    4. yum remove kmod-nvidia ... (the package that comes for 2.6.38.5-22 kernel)
    5. restarted

SeLinux relabeling kicked in .... (coffee time), rebooted itself, after restart I am back ...

    (note: I am using akmod-nvidia)

... and after a restart we are back to square one ... haha ... i guess we need to wait for more updates ...

I noticed the same yesterday, there is a version conflict between driver and kmod, i guess.
    One has version 270.*** -5, the other 270.*** -3.
In my case an old 2.6.38.3 kernel is still working...
    regards, Thomas

ok, so to get the working machine back up, follow the steps above.

Then, once you are able to log in, generate new xorg.conf. As a root run the nvidia-xconfig.
After that, the next restart should be ok as well ...

    P.S. I guess the RPMFusion xorg.conf is a suspicious ...

Re: F15 crashed after May 6 update, please HELP!

Just had the same issue. Fixed it by removing kmod-nvidia packages (I removed the two I had). Removing xorg.conf was only needed to get the system to boot in fall-back mode. The same xorg.conf is working fine again now.

Must be a bug with the akmod nvidia drivers or a conflict with version numbers as listed above.
