Gnome 3 Help - Shortcuts, Applets, Tips?
Hi
Well gnome 3 is new. I agree its intuitive but I still don't know how to get a few things done. So are there any links to some usage tips and pointers? List of keyboard shortcuts, gnome 3 plugins, etc?
I've had two issues so far (the first two points below) which I remember and will keep adding stuff here as I come across something.
1. When I open an application, lets say a terminal, and I try to open it again by simply clicking its icon in the activities, it doesn't work. It brings my first terminal to focus. I have to right click and select "New Window". Is the a way I can get a new window directly?
2. I have a dual monitor system. However, my workspace manager just looks at the first monitor. So if I put any window in a workspace, it goes to the first monitor. How do I get the workspace switcher to use both?
3. I've read a lot about the fact that gnome 3 has some nice keyboard shortcuts that let you use the mouse as less as possible. I found a few myself but is there a comprehensive list somewhere?
4. Are there "gnome - plugins" I think I read about this somewhere but I'm not sure. If yes how do I get them?
5. Anything else about gnome I should know? Honestly, I really like it
Thanks in advance!

Found something for shortcuts:
http://www.multimediaboom.com/gnome-...use-shortcuts/
Is something missing? If not then point 3 is done

Alright. My bad. I went hunting all over the Internet and never looked at Fedora's help at all. I think I'd better read through that first.

A great idea for a thread! Should probably be placed in the Guides & Solutions section and made a sticky if it generates high quality responses.

Another question. How do you specify startup and default applications? I can't find the config window.

@Miikka Thats brilliant! Thanks
It would be great if there was a wallpaper cheat sheet :P.

Install gnome-session-properties for startup applications.
System Settings > System Info > Default Applications for...Default Applications.

Re: Gnome 3 Help - Shortcuts, Applets, Tips?
@Cygnia That was in gnome 2.x. The preferred applications window is not there in gnome 3.
I'll try the gnome-sessions thing though.

Another question - Is there a way to add new categories on the applications list?
I have the Electronic Lab package group installed but there is no separate section for it. In gnome 2.x there was a separate electronics menu.

Alacarte can do that for you.

A couple of Q:s that I need answered to make G3 remotely usable;
How do I minimize windows?
How do I put my current work on the desktop for easy access?
How do I find the right window of the 6 to 10 I usually have open now that there is no icon bar/window
How do I get a bunch of little applications that monitor stuff and keep me informed ;-)

@bob alacarte shows the Electronics menu. But this isn't shown in the applications categories list in gnome shell.

Are you sure you put it in the right place? Also try logging out and back in.

Re: Gnome 3 Help - Shortcuts, Applets, Tips?
The menu comes with the Electronic Lab package. I didn't create it myself. I saw the menu in alacarte but not in shell. So I thought its different in gnome 3.
To install just the menu, you need to run
Code:
yum install electronics-menu

I have a fresh install of F15 with Gnome 3 and it's definitely there. System Settings > System Info > Default Applications.

Re: Gnome 3 Help - Shortcuts, Applets, Tips?
Sorry. I was looking for something called 'Preferred Applications'. Didn't realize the window is called System info. I misunderstood what you said. Its there. Thanks
