Greg, there was a recent update to gnome-shell, which stopped all the extensions working, a quick fix (not ideal) is to

I got the extensions' update and they are working, but Alt F2 is not. It might be an issue with the keyboard itself so I will try to test with another one.

yeah i know about that Dave, but to re-enable them once that update was installed, all you have to do is
alt+f2 r
which will restart the shell and enable the extensions again
|

I was trying to disable Gnome long enough, ALT+F2 r, so that I could get some work done because it was always freezing. However, after a sudden reboot all I have is text. After entering the root password I have a prompt that I can work with. Anyone know how to restart the Gnome desktop? ALT+F2 R, restart, reload, and even rl have been unsuccessfull.
