Gnome shell freezes

Hellow to all u cool people out there

I am having a wierd problem with Gnome 3.
So far, i'm getting used to it, and i actually like it, except the current fact, that i can't get fglrx to work.

... and the other minor annoyance, that it freezes up on me.
Sometimes - not always, but seemingly at random times, and quite frequently - when i hit the windows-button/activities-corner and start typing to find the application i want to launch, it just hangs there after a letter or two.

I can move the mouse cursor, but apart from that, there's no response what-so-ever, no blinking hdd-led, nothing. That eventually forces me to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to kill x, and once it's up and running again, it usually starts a process, called gnome-shell (which means that there is now two of those), that uses 100 pct cpu untill i manually kill it.

Anyone else experiencing this and/or have any suggestions towards a solution?

Thanks in advance

Re: Gnome shell freezes

a few of us are having worse crashes than that - serious hard freezes requiring a power/reset button press, and yes i've noticed it seems to happen a lot with the activies corner.

Re: Gnome shell freezes

I can trigger a hard-freeze by simply running rsync to backup my home folder to a USB external HD; when rsync is running simply moving the mouse toward the activities corner causes a freeze requiring ssh'ing in and running "telinit 3" && "telinit 5", or complete reboot.

Funny thing is that if it weren't for stupid stuff like that GNOME 3 is kind of cool.

that's not a hard freeze - i can't ssh when mine freezes - in fact i just got a freeze hitting the reply button!

its got to be nvidia as i just ran mprime over night for 8 hours again with no problems, then about 10mins of desktop usage and the thing dies!

Re: Gnome shell freezes

Yeah, it must be something with the graphics driver, although only in gnome shell, as it doesn't happen in either xfce or the gnome fallback mode for me.

although not just the nvidia driver, as i use ati.

Re: Gnome shell freezes

I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt the NVIDIA drivers are what is causing the issues on my machine. It runs KDE and XFCE fine, but GNOME locks tight. Didn't start till I installed NVIDIA drivers. Complete removal of nouveau actually seemed to make it worse. I have not had time to try and figure out whats going on, anyone have any idea. I also have a laptop running i915 video, all DEs work fine under FC15 on it.

Re: Gnome shell freezes

I am having the same problem. Gnome freezes but the virtual consoles are still responsive. Falling back to F14 kernel works fine, but 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.i686.PAE freezes Gnome...

Re: Gnome shell freezes

I had same freezes on my Fedora 15 x86_64, and NVidia GT218 [GeForce 210]

On the virtual consoles there a lot I/O errors and gnome-shell messages:

After 10 new installations I am back again to fc14.

Re: Gnome shell freezes

I'm running X86_64 with an NV GTS-240. Haven't had time to try it on the other machine with the 8600GT.
