Any pidgin/empathy permament integration?

Hi,

I'm looking for some permanent shell integration for pidgin or empathy. By permanent, I mean something that would constantly notify me of unreaded messages in the background, not just blink twice in the new tray area and disappear.
I tried led notifications but it seems to be quite hard on my laptop and the best pidgin plugin relies on a package that's Ubuntu-specific.
Tried some shell extensions or other stuff but they either dont work as I would like them (ie. just adds static messenger icon to upper right corner or I simply cant make them work at all.)

What you are using? Maybe I missed some obvious solution. Thanks.
