No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

Hey guys. I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try? Thanks

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

I also had a sound issue after I upgraded to this kernel, but haven't looked close at it to see if it was the kernel or something else that was updated at the same time.

On mine, I have a 7.1 sound card, but to get 7.1, you must use the front audio jacks as well as the back ones. Previously, output was sent to both and having something plugged into the headphone jack on the front panel did not cut off the rear mounted speakers,. After the update, the rear mounted speakers are cut off if anything is plugged into the headphone jack on the front panel.

So until I figure this one out, I am now back to just a stereo output from my sound card

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

Yes, something similar happened to me, though the it was slightly different. After the update I had no sound from my headphone jacks, though HDMI audio from my GT220 was working fine. At first I thought my headphones had died, but plugging them into the monitor (which is a 19" HDTV That sits on a desk) proved that wrong. Checking pavucontrol showed that the default analog out had switched to "Analog Headphones", which is actually the rear jack, not the front one. Switching the output back to "Analog Stereo" fixed the problem.

So double check the settings in pavucontrol.

CronoCloud.

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

I have had mine set to "Analog Stereo Duplex" but will try the "Analog Stereo" and see how that affects it.

Ok, there are 2 different output settings. You were referring to what is unfer the Output tab, and I was referring to what is under the Hardware tab.

I will play around with different combinations and see what works.

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

CronoCloud, I logged into the new kernel (the problematic one) and checked all settings in pavucontrol. The default output is RV710/730 Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output, which is the default I use for all my OS's and was what I used with the old kernel. After checking the PulseAudio volume meter, I see that the bars are moving, but there is still no output. I had made no configuration changes before I updated to the new kernel. The Analog Stereo (the ports on the front and back of the case and motherboard) have been disabled to avoid problems. Again, this is the same exact configuration that I had before upgrading to the new kernel. Also, an interesting thing to note: my Debian sid (unstable) box also upgraded to Linux 3.0 today, and has the same problems :|. This one was a fresh install with no configuration changes before upgrades.

Alright guys, so this appears to be an HDMI audio only issue. For the sake of using the newer kernels on any of my systems running Linux 2.6.40/3.0, I've gone back to using the Analog Stereo output on the motherboard. Can anyone explain though why only HDMI audio would be affected?

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

I too am without sound with 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64, works fine with previous kernels, onboard nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
edit: got sound from front jack playing with mute/unmute in pavucontrol, then I lost it again trying to get sound out of the back where I also have speakers connected.

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

I'm wary of this kernel, reading the change notes, especially the comment of kernel 3.0.0 in disguise.

Re: No sound from Pulseaudio or ALSA after 2.6.40 kernel upgrade

2.6.40 = 3.0. It's just renamed for compatibility reasons or something along those lines. In other news 2.6.40.1 gave me my sound back!

Well, I don't know then, keep looking in koji for new kernels to try or just keep using 2.6.38
