Fedora 15 application icons missing
I am reasonably experienced with Fedora 15 - having used two systems upgraded from Fedora 14. I had a strange problem with a brand-new Dell Vostro 3550 laptop with clean a Fedora 15 x86-64 installation.
I chose to download the boot image and install from the network. I selected packages for software development without customizing anything. The installation went on smoothly. Once I started using the system, I used yum to install several additional packages. Strangely the icons for these applications seem to be missing.
Screenshot1 shows that both Thunderbird and Remmina (for remote desktop) icons shown as a generic icon.
Screenshot2 shows the Default Applications tab in the System Info where Thunderbird does not have an icon.
Any suggestion??

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
Even if you set thunderbird to be your default mail application, you still have to manually add the icon into your favorites pane.
open up your Activities overlay, select Applications, then narrow it down by selecting Internet.
Then right click on the thunderbird icon, and select "Add to Favorites"
Edit:
Oops, I see you aren't just referring to them being missing in the favorites pane.
Try restarting Gnome and see if they show up then.

Restarting Gnome or even rebooting system did not help. I also made a new screenshot of the favorites pane, the generic icon there is for Thunderbird. Strange?
I also tried to install a few more applications (such emacs) and their icons are missing too.

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
Hmm, I found a strange solution. I installed alacarte (the menu editor, I was thinking that I might be able to use it to change application icons). But all of a sudden all the missing icons reappear as normal. Two of my other computers were upgrade to Fedora 15 from 14, both having the alacarte packages already installed before the upgrade.

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
I have a similar problem with KDE 4.6.5 and Fedora 15 after upgrading to kernel 2.6.40-4: Firefox 5 does not create an entry in the application launcher. This can be fixed with the KDE editor by manually creating the missing entry (right click on the border part of the application launcher). However, the Firefox entry, which I pointed to /usr/lib/firefox-5/firefox, has no icon. It works and starts Firefox, but I have found no way to add the missing icon. Any ideas?

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I've got the same problem in F16 (fresh install). Everything I've installed via yum displays the default application icon.
I have alacarte installed (and did some exciting things to get it running), but that hasn't made any difference.
Application icons definitely exist in /usr/share/icons/hicolor, but aren't displayed even when I set hicolor as the current icon theme in gnome-tweak-tool.
Frustratingly, my girlfriend did a fresh install of F16 at the same time and doesn't have this problem >_<
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, that would be enormously helpful.

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
The problem sorted itself out. The only thing I can recall doing before icons magically appeared was installing Zimbra Desktop from their binary installer o.0

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
I'm having the same problem on a fresh install of Fedora 16 (all new hardware - AMD A6 with an Asus motherboard). The only difference is that it isn't all of the yum installed software, but random ones installed by yum have the default icon.
I hope it sorts itself out for me as well... I've tried everything including manually creating icons and changing the directory settings. If it corrects and I figure out what did it, I'll post again. It is a pain to have nondescript icons in the favorites section!
If nothing changes in a week or so, I'm seriously considering making a switch to KDE before wiping the drive is a big deal. If there are any other fixes to try under Gnome, I'd appreciate ideas.

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
You could try installing Zimbra Desktop (and removing it) to see if something in its install process sorts it out. If it does, that might help track down what the problem is and why it's happening.
It wouldn't hurt to see what the permissions are on the folders in /usr/share/icons either.

Re: Fedora 15 application icons missing
Everyone has permission to access the icons folder, so that's working OK.
So far, no program installations have fixed it for me.

Update: It is very strange but installing alacarte today (and not before when I tried) worked and I got the icons!!
The key may be that I got transferred to a secondary mirror and I wonder if that was the difference.
If it helps anyone later, here is all the details:
# yum install alacarte
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process

--> Running transaction check
---> Package alacarte.noarch 0:0.13.2-3.fc16 will be installed
--> Finished Dependency Resolution

Installing : alacarte-0.13.2-3.fc16.noarch 1/1
Installed:

So, the key may be that something isn't quite right with one of the mirrors used for istallation and updates? I don't know enough about how the mirrors work to say if the data is different or if there is something in the program that didn't install properly before to give me the fix. However keep trying and having the right timing seems to work!
