Changing SATA Mode for cdrom

On F15_64 installed on my new box with an ASUS mother
board, I have not been able to mount a cdrom. In
particular, no suitable device appeared in /dev . Now
looking at the bios, I found a SATA Mode option.
I changed it from "IDE Mode" to "AHCI Mode".
The reesult is that I now have the symbolic link
/dev/cdrom -> sr0
and it works correctly.

My question is will the change I made have any
bad consequences?

Thanks for your comments.
Mike.

Re: Changing SATA Mode for cdrom

I don't think it would. The only negative that I can think of, and one that I experienced myself, would be if you're still booting into a legacy OS such as Windows 2000 or earlier. In such a case, the legacy OS would probably no longer boot. And switching from IDE SATA mode to AHCI SATA mode should actually be beneficial, as you'll get full support for all the features of newer SATA drives.

I transplanted an older 160GB sata 1.5 hdd that dual booted W2K and F12 into a new computer build after the previous machines mb bit the dust. Once in the new build, with SATA IDE mode selected, I could boot into W2K (though I really rarely ever did that anyway). Before installing W7 on another new hdd on the new system, I switched to SATA ACHI mode (on both SATA controllers), then installed W7. That's when I discovered W2K would come up in BSOD on an attempted boot up. F12 had no problems at all with the transition. In fact, I'm in F12 right now.
