Question F17 on old hardware?

http://lists.fedoraproject.org/piper...er/158976.html

So is this going to be G3 DE (non-3D) or a nicer fallback mode?
I apologize if it is obvious, but I am confused about 3D software acceleration with older hardware. Won't there be a huge performance hit (on older hardware) through 3D software acceleration?
Or is F17 going to offer the G3 experience in 2D?

Re: F17 on old hardware?

My 2 ¢ . . .

would be to suggest that Fedora 17 (at least the F17 Design Suite) might consider that to further support older hardware
you guys might(?) try something like changing the default back
to supporting 3-button mouse emulation for some of the "older" USB input devices/game controllers)
- btw still found in some university computer labs - not only for 3D acceleration / gaming but also for Blender 3D in the Design Suite spin ?

Thanks.

Re: F17 on old hardware?

bbqdave: it's software 3D. We don't really have enough data yet on what the performance will be like. Remember that Shell isn't doing anything very _taxing_ with 3D, it's not like it's Crysis.

If you decide to try it out, note that F17's kernel has debugging enabled, which makes it much slower; if you want to get a true feel for current performance it's best to rebuild the kernel with debugging disabled first.
