    Pulseaudio + Fedora 16 + audigy 2 ZS - No sound

    hi,

i'm a long time user of fedora (started on fedora 9) and have come up with a problem with my sound card, it's a soundblaster audigy 2 zs and pulseaudio will not see it , I've disabled the on-bopard sound card from the BIOS but it still see's it and uses it.

i can play videos and audio files through Smplayer and VLC as i can set the sound card there. All i want to do is hear stuff streamed through the web (firefox). if this can not be sorted then i'll have to bid a fairwell to fedora and choose a differnet distro that does not use pulseaudio.

    thanks in advanced

    Fats

    Re: Pulseaudio + Fedora 16 + audigy 2 ZS - No sound

I just had a similar problem with my upgrade to F16. In my case the perms on the /dev/snd files were not allowing my logged in user access.

A temp fix was chmod o+rw /dev/snd/*, then restart pulseaudio (kill the process), or logout/relogin.

The long-term fix is add your login user to group audio, or hack udev rules to give better perms.

Or maybe there's something else that didn't quite work right with the yum upgrade I did and some automagic things didn't happen.

But adding the user to the group didn't work I need to change the permission everytime.

    Re: Pulseaudio + Fedora 16 + audigy 2 ZS - No sound

Had this problem on GE210, but this should fail for everyone.

Upgraded from F15 to F16 using preupdate.

    pactl list
(no permissions errors, not found, etc.)

There is an FC15 unique problem, symlinks in pam...best fix is...

    authconfig --updateall --nostart
    rm -rf ~/.pulse

If that doesn't work, this also works...

su -c "usermod -aG pulse,pulse-access,jackuser,audio root"

Both of these survived after reboot. All users had sound icon, and audio devices.

I tried all of those fixes. None of them worked. I guess I'm just unlucky.

    Re: Pulseaudio + Fedora 16 + audigy 2 ZS - No sound

Using chmod worked on my desktop (not my laptop) until I rebooted. I tried the authconfig fix, but all I get is Connection Refused when I try to do anything with audio and the same thing happens after the usermod "fix." However, checking the man page for usermod told me that the command you gave modified root's list of groups, not mine, so I ran it again, with the obvious change. No luck. Does that fix require logging out and it again?

    Re: Pulseaudio + Fedora 16 + audigy 2 ZS - No sound

I fixed an issue that was causing me trouble with kernel updates (No initrd line in grub.cfg.) on my desktop and the sound issue (among others) went away. Still working on the laptop, though.

    Re: Pulseaudio + Fedora 16 + audigy 2 ZS - No sound

I also have this problem. Any time there is a kernel update and I reboot for it, my users lose perms to /dev/snd

I've tried the usermod and other solutions listed above.

Only fix is to chmod /dev/snd* and this does not survive a reboot...
