RESOLVED - do not run dconf-editor as root with the expectation it will set it for a specific user (after thinking about this, it makes clear sense - dconf-editor would affect the user logged in).

Thanks dd_wizard for the reply.

Right, yet I did do that (dconf-editor, and reload -- mentioned it too) in the other post... that I mentioend the things I did. (cited in last post too)
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...=1#post1563233

I edited it in dconf-editor, also through vi/vim, and - I did do the alt-f2-r bit too after that.

The file in question (mentioned previously) shows more than the default 2 workspaces.
I have additionally rebooted the system numerous times since the last post a number of days ago.

Anyone responding to this - please see the other things I've done listed at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...=1#post1563233

I appreciate any help on this -

Thanks much,
gid99

Okay,

I got in my own way.
the reason why it did not work for me is that I ran dconf-editor AS ROOT. So the moral of the story is run dconf-editor as yourself -- NOT AS ROOT.

Appreciate everyone's work here on this making this alternative to the jacked gnome3.

I'd really like to have more than just two of the default workspaces.

I have tried a number of things (see third post above this) already including the dconf-editor (as root and as a non-root user). I've also edited the specific file directly (again, please see the specifics I performed three posts above this one).

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

I can get multiple workspaces by pressing the big plus button when you move your mouse over to the hotspot.

What version of cinnamon are you using? I thought I was on the most current version, but I don't get the big + sign in expo mode.

Hmm, same here. I wonder if I did something to turn it off?

Code:
Installed Packages
cinnamon.x86_64 1.4.0-2.fc16 @fedora-cinnamon

Are you using a non-default theme? Some features apply to the default theme only.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

Hi,

I was skeptical about Cinnamon before giving it a try, even after all the good things I've heard about it. I was a big fan of Gnome2 but I still liked Gnome3. However I don't like the direction modern operation systems have been taking recently, be it Windows 8, Mac OS, Unity or Gnome Shell. More and more they allow for less customization, have huge icons and the interface is designed to be used with a finger instead of a mouse+keyboard. All of this to say that I have only been using Cinnamon for a few minutes now and I am very IMPRESSED! I think that it fulfills its goal perfectly of allowing for a Gnome2-like interface all while using the more modern Gnome3 capabilities. Customization is back (a lot of it I must say!) and the keyboard+mouse friendly UI is mush friendlier than GNOME Shell's touch-centric interface. My voice may not count for much, but I believe that for Fedora (and ultimately RHEL), Cinnamon makes much more sense to be used as a default shell instead of GNOME Shell. For desktop (and not tablet) productivity, I believe that Cinnamon is the answer that a lot of people have been waiting for in the last two years. It may be too late for F17, but with some luck, I'm really hopping that Cinnamon will become Fedora's new default shell!

MorphingDragon - that is cool. I finally got the multiple workspaces to work when I ran dconf-editor not as root.
Like your method.

That's it, I use Loki. Hopefully, the author will add the + button.

It's already added, too bad themes aren't up-datable with yum.

Cinnamon needs gnome3 to work, does gnome-shell work with your Mate setup?

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

Ok,
do i need a complete gnome3 installation or are only some pakages missing?
Gnome3 is no problem with mate but i don't like to install it complete.

Gnome3 is no problem with mate but i don't like to install it complete.
Try installing control-center , nautilus, metacity and gnome-keyring as that should install most of the deps.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

Thx,
it works.
After installing control-center, nautilus, gnome-keyring and gnome-shell cinnamon starts from mdm.
Maybe Leigh can add this packages as dependencies for cinnamon, to make it possible using cinnamon without gnome3 for minimal installations.

Exclamation Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

I have just lost my cinnamon shell, help please ....

I have just updated cinnamon from 1.4 [I believe] to 1.4.0.2 and now cinnamon does not work - Clutter initialization error.

$ cinnamon 2>cinfault.log
$ cat cinfault.log

(cinnamon:8253): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context
Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.

$ rpm -q muffin cinnamon clutter
muffin-1.0.2-1.fc16.x86_64
cinnamon-1.4.0-2.fc16.x86_64
clutter-1.8.4-1.fc16.x86_64
