F16 LXDE freezes when switching monitors on Lenovo X220

Hello,

I've installed the Fedora 16 LXDE spin on my X220 and it's been fine for about a week. Mostly I've been using it with a widescreen monitor connected to the displayport. When I do this I click:

<menu> <settings> <monitor preferences> which brings up a window, in which I uncheck "Turn On" for "DVI Monitor" - my laptop is off to the side so I don't want to use it's screen, just the external monitor.

When I wish to disconnect the widescreen, I just go back into the monitor settings, turn off "HDMI1" and turn on "DVI Monitor" to bring the laptop screen back up.

No problems and I've gone back and forth several times.

However, starting this morning, when I attempt to disable one of the monitors (doesn't matter which) it just hangs the GUI. I can <ctrl><alt><F2>, log in as root and shutdown -r (or just hold the power button ) but nothing via the GUI will respond.

The other thing I notice is when the system comes up with both monitors running, the laptop screen is not showing the full screen - there's a section off the bottom. If I set the bottom launch panel to bottom alignment and 100% width I can't see it. Also, I've tried dragging an lxterminal window "down there" so it's completely invisible and caused a GUI lockup.

I've tried a startup / shutdown cycle with the HDMI disconnected and then restart with it connected but this has no effect. I've looked in /var/log/messages and Xorg.0.log but haven't seen anything that looks
helpful.

What I noticed during the last freeze was the activity monitor showed CPU usage up (and the internal fan speeds up). Running top I see openbox pegging the processor. I killed that and went back to the GUI (ctrl+alt+f1) and control was restored, but obviously things are basically useless at that point (although I can interact with currently running apps via mouse (no keyboard).

Any suggestions? I've made sure all RPMs are up to date - currently running kernel 3.1.7-1.fc16.x86_64, openbox.x86_64 3.5.0-3.fc16, and xrandr returns:

Re: F16 LXDE freezes when switching monitors on Lenovo X220

This should be "simple or normal" kernel issue for those using propietary Nvidia or Ati drivers, due a kernel updating from 3.0 to 3.1

You can return to the previous runing state by choosing kernel before (choose it from grub) and I think everithing will go to normal.

Thanks God i dont have any issues on my T500, because my video card is an INTEL, it is not affected by kernel updates.

Actually I installed the Fedora 16 Gnome 32 bits and it runs very well, on this mache

Regards

Re: F16 LXDE freezes when switching monitors on Lenovo X220

Thanks Pacifico,
I tried an earlier kernel and no luck. I also have the Intel HD card, so I don't believe it's using the nVidia driver.
