Weird Core Dumps...

I have run fedora for many years but I have not had the privilege thus far to try to figure something like this out. I have Fedora 16 64-bit running on a machine at home. The machine is not that old (couple of years or so). I started having weird problems with it, so I first thought it might be the video card. So, I replaced that. Then, I continued to have problems, so I replaced the memory. I'm still having issues. I finally figured out how to get information out of a core dump file. Here's what it said:

(gdb) core-file core.22142
[New LWP 22142]
[New LWP 22173]
[New LWP 22171]
Core was generated by `/usr/libexec/vino-server'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
#0 timeout_free (t=0x1ccb9c0) at glib-watch.c:206
206 t->glib_poll->timeout_req_cleanup = TRUE;

I tried "googling" for an answer, but I couldn't find anything that looked like what I am facing. Any thoughts?

I am thinking it might be PSU related at this point (notice that my last resort is to blame Fedora . The issues are not isolated to VNC-based sessions. I was using NX in the past and that gave me fits too. I think it even happens when I'm logged directly into the box.

Re: Weird Core Dumps...

I think you got it in one - Querying Info from the RPM which owns File `/usr/libexec/vino-server':
Code:
$ rpm -qif /usr/libexec/vino-server
Name : vino
Version : 3.2.1
Release : 2.fc16
Architecture: x86_64
Install Date: Tue 08 Nov 2011 19:03:33 GMT
Group : User Interface/Desktops
Size : 2063410
License : GPLv2+
Signature : RSA/SHA256, Thu 27 Oct 2011 02:40:13 BST, Key ID 067f00b6a82ba4b7
Source RPM : vino-3.2.1-2.fc16.src.rpm
Build Date : Thu 27 Oct 2011 04:52:43 BST
Build Host : x86-02.phx2.fedoraproject.org
Relocations : (not relocatable)
Packager : Fedora Project
Vendor : Fedora Project
URL : http://www.gnome.org
Summary : A remote desktop system for GNOME
Description :
Vino is a VNC server for GNOME. It allows remote users to
connect to a running GNOME session using VNC.
...Which explains why it only happens while you are connecting using VNC! I suppose the first thing to do is to verify the package in case anything has got corrupted on your machine. The following should return nothing if all the files from the package remain as installed:
Code:
rpm -V vino

I probably didn't word that very well. I was also seeing issues when logged in directly to the box and when accessing it via NX. I'll verify vino when I get back to my computer, though. Thanks.

Re: Weird Core Dumps...

I think I figured it out! Every time I had problems, a red circle was at the bottom right-hand corner of my screen. After some googling, I found that this means I'm recording a "screencast", which is triggered by Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R keyboard shortcut. Interestingly enough, I use a plugin for IntelliJ IDEA called "Rearranger" and guess what its keyboard shortcut is mapped to by default?!?!

Is there any way to turn off screencasting or at least disable the keyboard shortcut? I couldn't find it in the keyboard settings screen. This little "feature" has cost me a lot of time and money (I bought a new computer (the parts to build it) because I thought my mobo had gone bad).
