Fedora 16 KDE and SDHC memory cards.

I've got a camera that uses SHDC memory cards (8-gig Sandisk) and I can't get my external USB card reader to pick up any trace of the card after it's be formated in the camera. (vfat file).
Compact flash memory cards on the other hand present no problems whatsoever by the computer and most all of the photo software installed on the system. So the big question is how to get these darn cards to automount by the computer when the cards are inserted into the reader like the Compact Flash memory cards which work fine. This is a big problem with both the Fedora and Ubuntu systems I'm presently running. But on a Acer netbook the cards when inserted into the SDHC card reader ( I'm using Dream linus i386 v.5.0) works wonderfully. Can this be fixed in newer versions of Fedora?

I've installed a program called pysdm from the repository but it just shows the hard-drives that are mounted and running on the system.

Any help that would be this problem behind me would be appreciated as I would like to do some picture xtransfers off of the card without using the camera to computer usb connection cable to do this.

Thnx,

Richard

It might show up as /dev/mmcblk*
Plug it in and look in /dev, in the output of dmesg, or in /proc/devices

I've check under /dev and see no such indicator. This stuff baffles me. You would think Linux in general would get a handle on this a long time ago. Pretty disappointing. . . It really stinks to have a card with photo's and you can read the damned thing in any type of card reader. Why would it work in a netbook that has a build in card reader adn not in a external USB reader that plugs into a USB port? Dunno. Someone has got to get a handle on this issue. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has seen this problem.

Re: Fedora 16 KDE and SDHC memory cards.

Problem solved. . . . bought a external 'USB' plug-in card reader for SD/SDmicro cards, usb 2.0 compatible and it works like a charm. The 'brand-name' is DYNEX. It has a built in driver for Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, MacOS 10.4.x or higher. $11.00 plus tax.

As soon as I plug the SD card into it and the USB card reader into the USB port . . . boom .. Fedora now pops up and asks me how and where I want to import the photo's with which program etc. etc. etc. . . Great. . . .don't need to plug the camera into the computer and don't need to use the camera's battery. . .

I guess it depends on the card reader and the age of them. My Dazzle* usb card reader must be out of date. . . works fine for Compact Flash though. . . .Anyone got thoughts or idea's on this?

Re: Fedora 16 KDE and SDHC memory cards.

I have a similar problem with a camera card not mounting when in the camera.

This used to work, but hasn't for several months.

Putting the CF card into a card reader does work, so it appears to be something about attaching cameras.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be going wrong?

Here is the relevant log portion:

Re: Fedora 16 KDE and SDHC memory cards.

Did you configure the camera as usb mass storage device or the usb connection as "computer" rather than "printer"?
