Exclamation Touchpad Problem on Samsung NP400B5B S02UK

Hi Everyone.

The issue is as follows:

After clean install of fedora 16 on my laptop: NP400B5B-S02UK my touchpad sometimes would stop working and at that point i would use the "****" sorry but i do not know the english name for that thing that i guess IBM invented or at least is famous for

It goes something like this:
Watch a video or write a document and suddenly the mouse pointer will go up and to the left where you'd normally go to bring the activities in gnome 3.

I would use the **** to finish whatever i do and reboot (sometimes i dont make it in time and the **** sops working as well and the pointer sits in the top left hand corner)

note that the buttons stop working as well first the touchpad's and then the ****'s.

Killing gnome-session : pkill gnome-session for example would solve the issue but only for a minute or two then freezes again. the only solution is to reboot.

i have tried other distros /arch, ubuntu, fudbuntu, /as well as F14 and none of them had the same problem.

sudo xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Generic Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Sleep Button id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ WebCam SC-13HDN10939N id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]

nothing in logs anywhere ....

Any ideas are really appreciated.

Unhappy Re: Touchpad Problem on Samsung NP400B5B S02UK

I have the same problem you described, on F10, F12, F14 and F15, gnome and LXDE, so I suppose it is something on X server ? I read many similar reports from people , I followed some updates / solutions, but this problem still exists. It is randomly appear, and I don't even know how to reproduce it.mouse clicks stop responding, even mouse pointer can move, and after a while even some keyboard shortcuts stack :/

The log files don't show anything strange, and whatever error I got I google it without nay luck.

If someone know anything about that please PLEASE respond ...

Since it is a synaptics pad, you might try this:

Make an entry in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory. Mine is named 10-synaptics.conf and contains the following:
Code:
Section "InputClass"
           Identifier "touchpad"
           Driver "synaptics"
           MatchIsTouchpad "on"
                     Option "TapButton1" "1"
                     Option "TapButton2" "2"
                     Option "TapButton3" "3"
                     Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "on"
                     Option "HorizTwoFingerScroll" "on"
EndSection
You may also wish to look at man synaptics. It is quite thorough on explanations. The example I used above is the one I have on my Acer Aspire One 722 netbook. The TapButton 1, 2, or 3 give me left, middle, and right click options. In other words, a two-finger tap works the same as the middle mouse button and a three-finger tap works like a right-click.

Hopefully, this will help with your problems. BTW the eraser-looking IBM originated device was called a "trackpoint". Some people think they are easier to use than a touchpad because you don't need to take your fingers off the keyboard to use it.

I guess i called it the way i did because its a samsung variation of it and its not very good coz you have to press it just right to get to a satisfying result

But i do love the IBM version (i love thinkpads and if it was not for my company policy samsung for staff i'd get IBM)

Anywho, back to the subj. I have not tried your suggestion however i will give it a go.
What i did tho was to compile 3.2.4 vanilla kernel and the problem almost gone.

Almost means that it still happens but much more rare. so far only once in 3 days (before 3-4 times a day).

Also before restarting gnome-session did not help but now it did.

On a side note compiling the kernel solved other problems: flash-plugin crashing much less and CPu does not go over the top after few minutes of flash video.

And one very important: it solved my wireless problem which was strange problem to begin with: I live in spain and my inet provider is ONO.ES. they give you a cable modem EPC3825 or something like that . so my connection would drop every few hours sometimes minutes when connected to that device. everywhere else with all the other wifi AP and routers i have no problem at all. but i did not have any problem with the epc3825 when i had fedora 14 or arch or suse (btw none of these distros had any problems described above. only fedora). I ran wireshark and it seems to lnot being able to receive arp messages. custom kernel solved that.

again if the problem with touchpad reoccurs ill give it a go with Xorg

Cheers
