What's the best method of playing pc games on linux

I didn't want to hijack this thread http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=277411 but the question is along the same lines.
The way I see it you have 3/4 choices if you want to play a game designed for windows

1: install windows
2: run windows on a virtual pc
3: install playonlinux (which uses wine)
4: install wine (only)

I have an ancient pc game "Tiger vs T34" (WWII tank sim) but since my mates xp pc packed up it's been gathering dust, I see playonlinux as an extra layer on top of an extra layer so is it any better than wine on it's own, also is there any way of using a ps3 handset on pc games ?

I recently ran across a web site offering "roms" (if that's what they're called) of old PC games. On of them was called Street Rod, a game my son and I used to play way back when. I was able to run this game with Fedora and dosbox. No wine, no Windows virtual machine. No nothing. Wondering if dosbox would work for you?

POL(F/LOSS) is a frontend to wine similar to that of Crossover (which is commercial). I just checked the wine appdb (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...ation&iId=8553), and the latest result is with a very old version of Wine. I would try a wine based solution first, as you get 3D acceleration, whereas a VM will not grant you any acceleration. I don't own that game, so I cannot test it for you, but if you can get a game/app running under a wine based solution, that beats dual booting or using VMs. I use Crossover personally, and love it. Most games I try work either perfectly or well enough that I have ZERO need for Windows anymore.
