Unhappy boot failure after update to 2.6.42.9-2.fc15.x86_64 with fc15

Greetings,

After updating to the latest kernel (and a handfull of other packages), the machine will not complete the boot process and drops out of the splash to a black screen with textual progress report that stops, apparently hung, after the virtmngr entry. The only thing that can be done at that point is a HW restart. Previous kernel, 2.6.42.9-1.fc15.x86_64 continues to work fine, so all is not lost, but the failure is puzzling and I'm not sure how to further trouble shoot the issue, so suggestons and/or explanations would be welcome

Thanks

paulliv

Do you have akmod-nvidia installed? There have been problems with building the "nvidia.ko" module for the new kernel on F16 x86_64. Could this be affecting you on F15 as well? If it can't build the module for your graphics card for the new kernel, booting will hang when it needs to switch to graphics mode.

With my machine, I have found that if I reboot using <Ctrl><Alt><Del> when the boot hangs, next time through the akmod build completes and all is well, but not everyone finds this.

If you are using akmod-nvidia, you can have the kmod-nvidia package installed as well. Then you will only need to wait a day or so before the rebuilt kmod-nvidia hits the repos and you can start using the new kernel..

Thumbs up Re: boot failure after update to 2.6.42.9-2.fc15.x86_64 with fc15 - SOLVED

Duh! 10,000 thanks for your tip

Checked and found that I did not have akmod-nvidia installed, did a yum clean all, followed by yum install, rebooted and the new kernel came up, after a bit of a delay, without a problem. Thanks for the gentle tap with the clue stick
