System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
Guys,
I tried to play a mkv file yesterday using vlc, but all I saw was a green screen. Using Movie Player, it told me that there was a problem with my codecs. Then I went to autoplus 1.4.3 and tried to uninstall and reinstall "Most Codecs" and i saw that it was uninstalling a lot of stuff... I closed Konsole right away.
This morning, I could not start Fedora. It shows the Fedora 16 screen and the progression bar at the bottom (I use NVIDIA drivers) and after the bar is full, all I see is a command prompt and I cant type anything. Please help! I think I need to restore my system. Thanks!

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
Dave (Dangermouse) may jump in and offer a better suggestion, but what I'd do is to wait for the boot to fail, then attempt to log in by 'shift-alt-f3' and seeing if you can at least get your username and su to work. 'startx' would be worth an attempt, but if that fails, then check this page:
http://dnmouse.org/autoten/index.php...ll-codecs.html
I'm not sure it's a fix, but if you copied that info and then started reinstalling what's listed there, presumably you'll also add back in the critical dependency that's borking your boot.
Just as an aside, I'd never stop something in the middle. Let it run and deal with the consequences later. Sadly, half-done is all-wrong. Sure, I can say that, but I've had panic set in and acted without thinking too.

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
I went deep on it and I found out something really bad:
Since I was trying to uninstall "most codecs", autoplus was removing all packages that depend on most codecs. Since I canceled it, it didn't remove everything. If i remember well, I remember reading in console that there were 240+ packages depending on most codecs.
Looking at /var/log/messages, i saw some of the removed packages. The list was long, but here are some of them:
kde-graphics, kdepim-libs, kdepim-runtime-libs, kdeutils-minimal and a lot of kde packages, including kopete, koffice, kget, ktorrent and others. I was trying to figure out which packages would be essential to get my system to start, but it would be too much work.
When I get home, I will try to use the restore option from the Fedora 16 x64 KDE DVD. I hope it works, though I am not sure since I upgraded from 15 to 16.
I'm gonna try reinstalling most codecs from terminal then I will try to restore using the DVD. Cross your fingers =D

Wow! Well, you might give this a try:
Quote:
|
yum groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation"
|
That should get you back to KDE as a starter.

Since I can't connect to the internet on terminal mode, would that work without internet connection? Thanks a lot, bob!

Are you sure you're not connected in CLI? Sorry, but yum's going to be looking for repositories, figuring you're online and will fail if it doesn't find them.

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
I think I'm just going to download manually the KDE packages and install them. I remember there is a FTP folder where all the Fedora 16 files are. Doesn anybody know what is the address? I used to access it from distrowatch but it is not working.

May be this is what you are looking for - Fedora packages from 64-bit
Are you unable to use even ethernet?

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
Yes! That is it! I'll work on it and let you guys know what happened. I wonder why autoplus removed the dependency on most codecs intead of removing only the packages it has.

Sorry for the double post, but I didnt make it. I have a list of the 275 packages unistalled by autoplus. Yes, 275. What I'm trying to do now is to access internet via terminal and use
# yum groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation"
I've seen a lot of posts on how to connect to the internet in terminal and I tried a lot of methods and none of them worked. Can anybody give me a hand? Thanks.

Almost forgot: whatever is easier, wired or wireless. Thanks again!

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
If you can plug into your network with an ethernet cable that should just work immediately (unless something to do with basic networking has been deleted...).
It's not impossible to run wireless from the command line, but it requires a lot more work.

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
As said above, try your ethernet connection first.
In order to use wireless, it has to be configured usinf iwconfig. If it is a wpa connection, you would also need to look at wpa_supplicant (as far as I remember). It would be significantly more work, than just plugging in the cable.

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
I did it. I have reinstalled the KDE Software Compilation and everything was going fine until... I ran to another problem. After I log into Fedora, I see the icons in the bottom like Hard Drive, Settings, Network... But the KDE one barely shows up and disappears and my desktop does not show up. I tried to remove all the plasma configuration files using rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma* but it still did not work. However, I think i did not do it as root.
I am using Fedora 16 KDE x64.

Re: System not starting after I tried to remove "most codecs" in autoplus
Alright guys, here is what I did: Although I reinstalled the KDE Software Compilation using yum, some dependencies were missing. I used something like package-cleanup –problems (you have to install yum-utils), but i just checked dependencies using yum. Once I installed those packages, it worked fine.
So, if you are reading this and you have a problem with your KDE, reinstall it using yum groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation" then make sure all packages that KDE depend on are installed. Install yum-utils and then do
# package-cleanup –problems
And then you'll be good to go. Ah, almost forgot: packages like konsole and terminal were also unistalled. I had to use bash and login in failsafe mode. To do that, on the login screen, enter username and password and right below where you type your password, there is an option, Session Type. Pick failsafe. It will start bash and you can start any application from there, even a browser to access the internet and download packages manually. Hope this helps. Thanks you all for your help.
