Decaying(?) system (FC 12) demands key presses

(This sounds like a hardware problem, but if I posted it in the hardware section and mentioned FC 12, it would be immediately exiled here.)

One of my desktop FC 12 computers, which has worked fine since FC 12 was new, has developed a quaint problem. It wants to pause at various times until I press a key on the keyboard. These times occur at all stages of using the computer - at boot, using the desktop, and at shutdown.

The places it pauses when booting vary. There may be several. "Registering binary handler for Windows applications" is often one. When I press a key, it continues.

When using the desktop, sometimes the mouse cusor vanishes and nothing responds to the mouse. When I press a key on the keyboard, the mouse cursor returns and the mouse becomse useable. When I am using a terminal on the desktop and enter a command like "less /var/log/messages" (followed by ENTER), sometimes the cursor in the terminal window vanishes and nothing happens. Then when I press a key (any key, it seems) the output of the command appears.

When shutting down, the computer will pause. The hard drive light will be inactive. If I press a key, the shutdown continues. This may happen several times.

If I don't press a key and just let the machine sit, it will eventually complete the shutdown after about 5 minutes. I haven't yet had the patience to just let the computer sit to see if it will boot without key presses.

I've replaced both the PS/2 keyboard and the USB mouse on the machine. (The replacements worked fine on a different FC 12 machine with the same motherboard.) The problem persists. There are always pauses on boot and on shutdown. When using the desktop, they don't happen often enough to make the machine unuseable. In fact, I'm writing this post with it.
