Adding wallpapers to system settings backgorund

I would like to add my own wallpapers to those listed in system-settings- backgrounds. So far I have tried using nautilus as root to copy/paste wallpapers to /usr/share/backgrounds and /usr/share/backgrounds/gnome but when I go to system-settings-backgrounds only stock images are listed. I ASSUME as usual I am doing something that is either wrong or not allowed. All images are in .jpg format. Any suggestions?

Henry

Re: Adding wallpapers to system settings backgorund

The way system-settings-backgrounds was designed to work was to select the drop-down for 'Pictures Folder' and use the '+' to select a graphic to add to its concept of the private 'Pictures Folder'. You can select any usable graphic you have anywhere on your system to add it to this 'folder'. It's not a folder in the true sense, but a list that it maintains.

Re: Adding wallpapers to system settings backgorund

Thats't the problem, when I run gnome-control-center to change gdm background, I click on system-settings-backgorunds and try to add wallppaers from my pictures folder I run into a permissions error or cannot read error.

I beleive the message was: "could not read Henry permission denied.

Presuming that your Pictures directory in in your home directory, I suspect that you do not have the correct permissions set on your Pictures directory. You, as owner, should have full access to this directory and its enclosed directories and files. You might try, in Nautilus, right clicking on your Pictures directory, selecting properties and the permissions tab then adjusting the permissions for owner, selecting the option to apply permissions to enclosed files. If that doesn't work, it might require a selinux relabel, if you are using selinux in enforcing mode.

Re: Adding wallpapers to system settings backgorund

I'd suggest, rather than disabling selinux, you might want to set it to permissive mode and take a look at any warnings generated while adding items to wallpaper. This will allow you to get to the root cause fairly quickly and make appropriate corrections. The stuff in the Pictures directory should all be User Data context.
