updating proprietary software
So,
downloaded Google chrome and Opera. Chrome was automatically added to the repos during install und stays up-to-date, Opera wasn't and therefore doesn't.
This is just one example, also happens with other software, e. g. clementine, nntpgrab, gpodder etc.
Is there a way to add these to the repos as well, so that I receive the latest updates when I run yumex?
Thanks in advance.

Re: updating proprietary software
Well, you can look at this list of third party repositories for Fedora. There is an unofficial repository for Opera in this list.
Clementine, nntpgrab and gpodder (in your example) are available in rpmfusion. Have you enabled rpmfusion already?

Re: updating proprietary software
Thanks for the link for the Opera repo. Yes, I have enabled rpmfusion. New versions of clementine and gpodder have been out for a while, nntpgrab has been displaying an ad for their new version for a couple of days. Guess they all take some time before they make it to the repo?

Yup! Depends on how soon the person maintaining the repo/package makes the packages and makes it available.

Re: updating proprietary software
Try this:
Code:
sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update nntpgrab
Quote:
|
nntpgrab.x86_64 0.7.2-1.fc16 updates-testing
|
1) Almost all of the package maintainers are volunteers, who have real jobs to go to and real bills to pay. Be thankful that they provide you with an rpm package to begin with. Don't expect them to serve you up the latest upstream release within hours/days of it's release.
2) Except for critical security fixes or very minor bug fixes, updated package releases generally have to spend some time in the "updates-testing" repos before being pushed to the regular "updates" repo. How long any particular package sits in updates-testing can vary considerably... from a few days to several weeks.

Re: updating proprietary software
Cheers Pablo, will try that out. And don't get me wrong, I am very thankful to anyone maintaining packages. I was just wondering, if there is another way of automating the update process. Anyway, is there any way to check, if a new release has been added to "updates-testing" and/or what its current status is?

Re: updating proprietary software
You can see what's sitting in the "updates-testing" repo concerning packages you already have installed with:
Code:
sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing check-update
You can see what's sitting in all of the *-updates-testing repos (including the rpmfusion repos) with:
Code:
sudo yum --enablerepo=\*u\*g check-update
Have a look here to check the status on packages.
I don't recommend you permanently enable any of the *-updates-testing repos and do a full "update" unless you fully understand the ramifications of doing so and know how to "fix" your system if it creates problems because you did. I see it all the time here... someone enables updates testing, does a full update, then disables updates-testing, then suddenly can't "update" or "install" anything because of some "protected multi-lib versions" error.
