vlc log linux

I was reading these 2 links about vlc log files.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1331884
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4...o-get-vlc-logs

Is there a reason why this doesn't work?
VLC -> Tools -> Preferences -> Select "ALL" -> Advanced -> Logging

I created the log file location and file. I also changed the verbosity to 2. I don't understand what the problem is.

The command line method works but I would prefer the gui method.

Code:
vlc --file-logging VLCLOG --verbose=2
