Unable to print to HP LaserJet 1320 in F17.
I have just installed F17 and I am trying to connect to my local printer, an HP LaserJet 1320. I downloaded the printer drivers for hp using this command from root - "yum search hplip" and I ran the systems setup for printer and was able to find the printer but could not print a test page. The print dialog shows the test print job as pending. When I ran CUPS from a terminal I got the following :
Quote:
printer HP-LaserJet-1320 now printing HP-LaserJet-1320-1. enabled since Sat 09 Jun 2012 10:39:26 AM PDT
The printer is busy.
system default destination: HP-LaserJet-1320
|
Nothing was running on the printer and the above CUPS output was prior to doing the print test.
Seems like my printer is in perminant "busy mode". How do I reset the printer status to the "ready mode"?
Thanks,
GLMarsh

Additionally I was trying to print from LibreOffice and even though the printer is seen it still just puts the print request in the queue and sits there.

Re: Unable to print to HP LaserJet 1320 in F17.
Not sure if this is your issue, but I ran into a problem that caused similar results as you describe.
What happened was the printer was set up to use the wrong driver, even though the right one was installed. I went into the printer preferences and selected the correct driver, now it prints fine.
run system-config-printer as root user.
Then select the printer in the window, double click, then in the "Make and Model" click the "change" button, and give it a little while to search for drivers.
Then click through the screens, selecting the proper manufacturer and printer. Then make certain that the correct driver is selected. You would want the hplip driver since you have it installed.
Hopefully that will fix your issue.

I was able to change the printer status to ready by using CUPS commands to remove jobs from the print queue and then "lp -d queuename filename". The job status changed to processing but nothing is happening on the printer.

Re: Unable to print to HP LaserJet 1320 in F17.
Personally I hate those add-on gui tools for printers. CUPS/ipp protocol was meant to be network configurable - use it.
Point your browser at ...
http://localhost:631
or http://127.0.0.1:631
Select "Administration" "Managage Printer" (use root:root-passwd if asked)
Select the printer entry and examine the "Connection" field. I *suspect you haven't set up the hardware connection end properly.

I think you meant "yum instal l hplip". You did install it, right?

Re: Unable to print to HP LaserJet 1320 in F17.
I share stevea's dislike for the add on guis. (Save perhaps for hplip, though I don't use it.)
For what it's worth, my experience (though I haven't used it in F17) is that the printer config tools will often fail but one can use either cups or, with an HP printer hplip to get it working.
I would first completely remove it. Then I would add it again with hp-setup -i
If it's a networked printer, put the IP address after -i. If it's locally connected, I believe that it will give you some options, including a directly connected printer--but to be honest, I haven't tried it that way.

Re: Unable to print to HP LaserJet 1320 in F17.
Well I guess I owe my responders a status update. DBelton's suggestion did not work the first time I attempted it. I don't know if I didn't wait long enough for the driver search or if I did something else wrong but it didn't solve the problem.
I tried the CUPS solution without any success either.
I tried the "hplip" solution and got a little further but only to the point of seeing the printer but the status was always either busy or stopped.
I set the problem aside for several weeks and decided to go back and try each of the solutions again. Right out of the gate DBelton's solution found the HP drivers I needed and after they installed I was able to print. Here is a belated but well deserved thanks for your help.

I too noticed "inconsistent" results when searching for the drivers here as well.
Glad you are able to print now
